I figured this is a good place to post this seeing as how everything I've learned has come from the great minds here at RIU. Shot out to Supra and realstyles for the killer info and build ideas.

This whole project started from a desire to have killer connoisseur grade smoke. The goal is not quantity, but rather quality. The Overkill idea is to cater to the plants needs in every way to the point of over doing it with the hopes of said plants producing phenomenal smoke.

My setup currently is a 2x2.5 gorilla tent illuminated by a cheap 90watt ufo light.
It houses a True OG mother plant that was given to me on fathers day. The mother will be relocated and I will be replacing the UFO light with a beastly DIY cob light and throwing clones from the mother into the tent on 12/12 as soon as they show roots. Still up in the air on what kind of media I will be using, though most likely some form of hydro.


Got a little package today from kingbrite, figured I'd share the start of project overkill.
KB Package contained:
8 Cree cxb3590 72v 3500k
8 ideal holders 50-2303CR
8 KB brand glass lenses 80degree
8 lens holders w/ orings.
2 MeanWell hlg-185h-c700A drivers.

My local true value had the screws and taps and necessary mounting hardware.
100 6-32 x 3x8
1 6-32 Irwin tap
2 #36 Drill bits as recommended by tap.
1 bottle of tap magic.
4 5/16" x 5" eye bolts.

Im currently waiting on the 12x24 sink from HSUSA.
Still need:
Thermal grease.
Cooling fan and a way to power it.
5/16" Drill bit for eye bolts.
Terminal block and screws.
Inline fuse.

Am I missing anything?

Also which way do you mount the rubber orings to the lenses? The groove is not center in the seal. Thinking thick part presses against the lenses holder.

Eventually, when all of my parts arrive and I get it put together, I'll be running (4) 3950's in a 2x2.5... and down the road I'm contemplating making it six (4- 3590's @3000k, + 2- cxa3070's @5000k). In that scenario I'd dim the 3000's until I flip to 12/12, and then fire them up full. At least that's what I imagine I'd do, there's a lot more for me to learn between here and there.

I'm curious to know how long between when you ordered the heatsinkusa's and when they arrive, hopefully you'll let us know.

Yup, a lot of light .. !

The plan must be to dim quite a lot and reach high effic., as at full intensity, would give over 2000ppfd and way past saturation point of plants.

@Gorillajdubs : could you measure and tell me if your lens's, metal outside 'caps' are more than 10cm in dimeter ? I'm planning on using a 10cm wide heatsink, and wouldn't want anything to extend past the sides of the HS ..

Well I got the heat sink today and started drilling and tapping. Got to the 12th hole and broke my tap because I didn't drill the hole deep enough. Lesson learned I guess. That lens holder will have to work with 3 screws. I'll pick up another tap tomorrow along with some thermal compound. Hoping to at least turn it on tomorrow night.

Im waiting to see when one of you guys run watercooling on your LED lights with something like a computer water cooling setup.

You could easily pipe the tubing outside the grow room to the radiators.

It's already been done with water cooling. Just can't recall who it was. Pretty sure it was one here though.

Late post last night because it took forever to drill and tap the sink, Im blaming it on cheap drill bits. The thermal compound that I used was very thick didn't spread easily at all, I used about .4 .5 grams on each cob. Ran for a solid 10 minutes no issues yet. Still need to mount the drivers somehow and wire up a 120v universal power socket as well as a fuse and ground line. The thing weighs a ton glad I got the 1/4" ratcheting hangers for it. I was able to inspect each led in each cob via a welding helmet they all work great. Can't wait to get this thing hung!

Wow. And I thought I'll be running them too close. lol

I'm setting up a build for a 3x2, and so far the spec is (4) cxb3070/3000k, and (2) cxa3070/5000k, and they are 8.5" apart on the 3' and 7" apart on the 2' length. The four cxb's are on a single dimmable driver, but I forgot to get a dimmable driver for the cxa's, so we'll see how that goes. The idea is to veg on the 5's with the 3's dimmed, and then turn them up after they go into flower.

Because of my logistics with my spaces, it might actually be a while before I get to put mine into use, I have to wait for another set to finish up. In the mean time, I'll be watching yours...
