Professor Marijuana's 45 Day Grow Q & A

Prof, last time my lights were as close as you say they need to be the buds actually looked burnt. Like weird yellowing, leafs got sun burnt too. So now I stick to about 12" away with my xxxl''s without problems, I thought as close as possible because I have no heat due to the awesome 8" xxxl's, but no I had the actual flowers yellowing only on the very top. The whole canopy did it. Everything below the top buds was just fine. It had to be light bleach. How do you avoid light bleach with your lights 4" away?
Big fan of the XXXL's. A foot is way to far away, if you're burning still you have some work to do. First what size vents? I use the 8 inch. How are you venting them? What size fan and what kind? How far are you pushing the air? do you have a booster? Have you aded sealing tape around gaps? The XXXL has some leakage around the edges and corners. Do you have proper ventilation in the room? Good air movement? Are you hydro? if you cool your resivour you can bring your lights much closer. Answer some of those to yourself and see if there are places to improve. Like I say, the difference between average growers and great growers is the little details. Let me know how you feel about those questions and how many of those are area you can improve on, then lets see if you can gain 4 to 6 inches. I bet you can

To add to that. Anyone who still has your ballast in the grow room get them out. Also, is the intake air you vent with coming from the same area the exhaust to? No use pushing hot air through your lights to cool them. Inbound from down lown, exhaust on top or preferably outside far away. Now see, we lose the bs and little details like these make a diff. You take twenty of them and your grow is much improved.

I have had this issue before, do you have a fan on your reflector? I have an 6" Xtrasun with glass with the fan it drops temps close to 7-10 degrees. Right now im getting bleaching on the flowers closest to the light even with the fan...im curious to know!
Every lamp I have is vented. I like the black max fans, they were designed specifically for this industry. They are the lazor beams of fans, compact and powerfull. I use the largest fans available and don't try to cool to many lamps with a single fan. I use one fan and one booster for every two lights. Try to keep your tubes as straight as you can and the run as short as you can. The boosters are cheap and worth every penny, backflow will kill you. ten degrees easy. what size bulb? how far away? Is the bleaching even or spotted? buds also or just leafs?

Prof, do you have any advice for us soil growers? Or is soil just not as efficient?
I don't care for soil while indoors. I wouldn't go hydro out and don't do soil inside. It is dirty, heavy, won't drain through a hose, prone to disease, uneven distribution of nutes, and slower to respond in emergencies, and takes longer to grow indoors. BUT, it's cheap to start. I use a cactus blend, pot doesn't like wet feet in soil, make sure it's well drained, easy on feeding and DON'T OVER WATER.

Then why are most outdoor plants being grown outdoors near or about 40 degrees lattitude already flowering? Although cannabis is a c(3) photoperiodic plant(less ruderalis strains). To say they require a 12 hr dark period to flower is not correct. It is very dependent on strain first and for most. With environment and plant health coming a distant second and third. 8-10 hours of darkness is a grey area for sativa dominant strains for the most part. And 10-12 hours of darkness is grey area for indica dominant strains for the most part. So I am guessing it does not necessarily 'need' 12 hrs of darkness to flower. Just more convenient for the grower, 12/12 that is.......

edit: oh ya, the prof is a fraud. he has been trolling this trash around for a few years now........
Longnight photoperiodic to be exact. By definition it reguires 12 hours continous darkness. As I've said it could have 20 hours of light as long as it has the twelve hours of dark. It will go into flower before the fall equinox outdoors because it feels temprid changes among other things. Oh yeah, years now and still around, anyone listen to you?

well i got to say wow what am i doing wrong i guess instead of vegging for min 2 - 5 weeks you will get better yields from a clone :)) if that isnt the most ridiculious thing i ever herd of i dont know what is and to get 11 pounds with only 2000 watts hahahaha
IMO if your getting them kinda of yields you should be in hightimes you surpassed everyone hell i can realisticly say i average 1136 dry grams per 1000 watt and by the way i run in excess of 16,000 watts in my grow rooms with over 700 plants in all stages

To summerise this technique, it is a style of growing that doesn't require a vegging period. Stable clones of the same strain are placed into 36 hours of darkness and go directly into a 12/12 light routine, or in my case 12:15 dark and 11:45 light. In my comercial facilities all our lights are put on a post that turns the entire lighting bank on and off together. In smaller grow setups where 2, 3, or 4 lights might be on individual timers I have seen where one timer gets bumped ar runs a little faster/slower then the rest and before you know it you only have eleven and a half hours of dark. Following my way allows for a bit of fudge room.

They remain in flower the entire time require to mature. In the case of a pure indica this can be as fast as 43 days from the start of 12/12 until harvest. The fastest strain for me was 43 days, this was also the highest yielding strain producing over 11 lbs of medical grade cannabis in approximately 36 sq ft under 2,000 WATTS HPS.

pS: your looking @ pure afganistan Indica hanks to many of the service military personal stationed in afganistan :))
And a week after your 5 weeks of vegging I'm harvesting.... Your Point?

Hey professor, great advise, i don't care how you got the buds in your picture, growing buds that size indoors is a great achievement no matter what. I would love to learn more about your techniques. Please ignore these haters, your advise is worth at least as much as there's. Continue teaching shan'do.

PHEW...glad I got that out...

Prof MJ thanks for your service to our country!

Please, please, please do not let those out to get you stop you from dropping knowledge on those of us you are ready and willing to listen. Keep the tips coming. I personally am in my 30's and just trying my first grow. It's outdoors however. Any advice you'd give for an outdoor grow?

Also, do you top, LST, FIM, or use any other method to increase yield?

MY thanks to you again. Fear not, those looking to sow discontent and hatred are far worse off then you and I will ever be. Stay strong, enjoy life, and get blazed!

back for some more Q's Prof

1. You mentioned that looking at trichomes was an outmoded way of determining when to harvest. What is a better method because this is all I know how to do (harvest when half the trichomes appear amber)? I do not have enough experience to simply do it by feel and I'm working with a new strain I am not yet familiar with (bubba kush).

2. This may sound strange but have you ever experimented with a non 24 hour light schedule e.g. 14/14 or 16/12 or something? I've always been curious as to what the effects of doing that would be?

3. I assume you were being serious about putting cyan pepper powder in the rez for mite repellant, how much powder do you use in how much water?

4. Hemaphrodites: are they triggered by interrupting the plants dark phase? Or are they also triggered by interrupting the plants light cycle as well. We on the east coast are about to get anally raped by a hurricane and I may end up losing power for a day or two. I know I should have a backup generator, but unfortunately I don't. I have a few plants in the final stages of flower and a few new clones ready to take their place. What can I do in the event of power loss to prevent my plants from going hermie?

My best advice for outdoors is soil prep and site selection. You can't dig to deep or to far out. If you can take the surplus soil and build up. The more depth with good soil and drainage the better. Deep water. I like to FIM in the beginning, sometimes two or three times. SUN, SUN, SUN

how would you set up a grow box for a small mother to take a cutting a fortnight from?
You can put a mom anywhere under just about anylight if a clone every two weeks is all you need. don't need a special room unless you need to conceal. A small, 400w MH is more then enough, strong window light would do it unti fall

Just going to flat ignore them from here out and see if they go away.
Good questions. I use a Brix meter. Cannabis when healthy has a sugar level from 10 to 12 percent. When it is ill the levels will drop three days before the plant will show usualy. When it hits it's maturity the levels will plunge, 72 hours from the start of the drop is when it is at it's max.

I know people who do a 12/20 light program. I don't like it, good way to get herms. don't need to trick them to get good results.

Yes I'm serious about the chilli pepper but it's still early so I'm not comfortable giving out directions yet.

Seems lot's of stuff will spark herms. Environmental and strains that aren't stable, and stress.

Hopefully power won't be gone too long. a dark phase won't hurt them if it's not days. after 36 hours or so you might try a battery powered lamp for a little bit but I wouldn't stress. Stay safe

Very interesting! I've never heard of a Brix meter but I looked it up on google and apparently it's what farmers, or anyone I guess, use to test the quality of produce. I read something about sampling the sap or juice of what you are testing. How do you do it with weed? Do you stick a leaf or something in there and get a reading? I want one, I want one! It sounds like a very handy device to have, not just for MJ; I could use it on my garden veggies to figure out when to pick them. Any model you recommend?

Insofar as the cyan powder, would it have any effect on an established infestation, or is it more of a deterrent rather than a cure?

Thanks I hope so too. Actually, for my flowers, my light cycle matches up with daylight hours basically for that reason (7am-7pm) So I suppose I could give them some natural ambient window light, though it won't be much. As for the clones, they might have to deal with only 12 hours of light for tomorrow. Be well!

Vents are 8".. I pull air from outside the house in a window box, and it exists out another window box. I live in the high country, temps are never over 75 outside. I use a 8" Can fan, this fan is only for the lights, its only on when lights are on... I do understand the lights need to be resealed. I use aluminum duct tape to seal it, this prevents co2 leakage. I have a 8" intake pulling from outside in, everything is on a CAP atmosphere controller (intake and exhaust). Also a 8" exhaust fan attached to a can carbon filter. Also running co2, also works off CAP controller connected to the cap ppm-1 meter. I have the co2 line attached to a CAP osocialting fan that pushes a lot of air. I run recirculating hydro setup. I do not have chillers, I really don't need them. Thing is I think you think the temp of the light is burning the buds, it is not. The glass on the lights are as cool as the concrete floor, I think the light is too intense therefore burning them, like a sunburn. And it sucks because its all the really nice tops end up looking fucked up. So this run I'm 12" away. Any closer and they get bleached, from exp... Any suggestions? Thanks.
Basically this is the configuration..
