To test the PPM (parts per million) you will need a ppm meter or a EC (electrical conductivity) meter more info here - https://www.rollitup.org/hydroponics-aeroponics/1764-tds-ec-ppm-wanna-know.html

to keep it simple i started like this

weeks 1 to 4 - 1/3 of recommended values
weeks 4 to 8 - 1/2
weeks 8 to 10 (start flowering) - 2/3 or all if i realise the plants can take that amount without nute burn

The last couple of weeks my girls start diet i progressivly reduce the amount of water (no nutrients)

To give u an idea i have a few plants in week 5 of veg and the ppm its around 1050 (2.1 Ec)..buy the time im done should be around 1200 ppm

I use a Bluelab Truncheon. It was a little expensive ($135.00) and I believe it is worth it. You also need a way of testing ph or your ppm won't mean pp.
Sometime the nutrient levels are dependant on the medium you are using. Generally for hydro you would start with an Ec around 1.2 and a ph of 5.5 to 5.8
