ppm reader (TDS meter) ???

need one myself. the cheap ones like this only go to 1000ppm so to hit the higher levels some strains need you would have to do multiplications to know what real numbers are. the expensive ones go higher than 999

Well, RIU has lots of threads about it, I almost feel bad doing another thread even though I've searched and read a lot here on it. I've just not decided on which one. There are decent ones in the 25-50 dollar range that go to 1999 PPM.

I guess im just researching which are most accurate, which come with calibration samples, etc.. That way i'm not just sticking this thing in water and taking its word for it. Need to do a controlled test in solution for an accurate reading. The trick is reading the auctions close enough to know which is which and comes with what, lol.

get the Hanna Combo pH & EC & ppm reader. Its worth the money. I use it and it works well.

well, many disagree. they all lose their ability to sense correctly. with proper care i imagine 2 years could be achieved. a lot of people replace them more than that. so being that all sensors die pretty quickly and must be replaced, a combo doesnt make sense.
cheap individual replaceable units.

A decent combo meter that does PPM, EC, TDS is going to run at 50 dollars or your wasting your money IMHO. These meteres Im talking about reatil for about 90 to 120 dollars but fleabay sells them for around 40 to 50 bucks.

This is a VERY important tool, right up there with LIGHTS! Thats how much you need a good meter. I would stay with name brand like below:

NUTRIENT TRUNCHEON METER HYDROPONICS WAND EC/PPM/CF H62

This is a decent quality meter that is very accurate and will last if you take care of it. They will eventually wear out but the way these are designed it will last a long time before any calibration issue will arrise or anything like that. They dont lose their ability to sense so to speak.

Thanks for replies what does this mean about the measurements of ppm they said - (Measurement Range: 0-9990 ppm. From 0-999 ppm, the resolution is in increments of 1ppm. From 1000 to 9990 ppm, the resolution is in increments of 10ppm, indicated by a blinking 'x10' image) :confused: you said-

0-999 PPM means it will not read further than 999 PPM in increments of 1 PPM integers. If you were to mix solutions and nutes up past that PPM amount you would not actually be able to do a reading with the small range meter. The ones that go to 1999 can commonly go by x10 where as the number being displayed should be multiplied by 10 to get the reading figure (up to 1999).

Example: A 0-1999 meter could show 130 as the read, you would then multiply that by 10, therefore 130 * 10 = 1300 PPM

This is how I understand it from using them years ago, if something has changed I would ask that a more advanced member please correct the thread. Regards.

If you have any links to that kind of price, anywhere, please PM it to me if you and the moderators do not mind. I've yet to see any decent combo meter go under $150 on ebay or other comparable stores, and go MUCH higher than that.
