The Opera de Montreal is taking the rock out of “rock opera” with

its ambitious interpretation of Pink Floyd’s classic double album, The Wall.

Another Brick in the Wall: L’Opera tells the story of Pink, a rock star

who retreats into his mind to cope with the alienation of fame.

Roger Waters' lyrics provide the narrative backbone of the two-hour production but

composer Julien Bilodeau has removed the album’s familiar rhythms and melodies

in favour of timpani and a 50-person chorus.

The production is finishing up a successful run in Montreal and will be heading to the US soon.

I thought I knew my shit on Pink Floyd.... I got their double album "Umaguma" at the age of 16.... I listen to them on a regular basis. Six months ago I joined Apples Music for 10 bucks a month. This basicly makes me a millionaire in music because I can call up damn near every album I can think of. Last week I discovered they came to the rock world earlier than I thought. Their debut album "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" came out a couple months after the Beatles releasted their Sargent Pepper LP. Back in the 60's and 70's the radio stations only played one or two of the songs on the Piper LP...

Long live Roger Waters and Pink Floyd!

New shrimp species named after Pink Floyd

A new species of shrimp has been named after Pink Floyd thanks to a pact between prog rock-loving scientists.

The synalpheus pinkfloydi uses its large pink claw to create a noise so loud it can kill small fish.

The team behind the discovery vowed years ago if it ever found a new pink shrimp it would "honour" the rockers.

Sammy De Grave, head of research at Oxford University Museum of National History,

said he has been a fan of the band since he was a teenager.

And it is not the first crustacean he's named after a rock legend, having already named

a species of shrimp after Rolling Stones front man, Mick Jagger - elephantis jaggerai.

Pink Floyd-themed artwork was created to make the discovery

He said: "I have been listening to Floyd since The Wall was released in 1979, when I was 14 years old.

"The description of this new species of pistol shrimp was the perfect opportunity to finally give a nod to my favourite band.

"We are all Pink Floyd fans, and we always said if we would find a pink one,

a new species of pink shrimp, we would name it after Pink Floyd."

The shrimp is believed to be the only crustacean named in honour of the band

The pistol, or snapping shrimp, has an ability to generate sonic energy by closing their enlarged claw at rapid speed.

It can reach 210 decibels - louder than your average rock concert - and results in one of the loudest sounds in the ocean.

The description of the species, found off the Pacific coast of Panama, has been published in the Zootaxa journal

and was co-authored with the Universidade Federal de Goiás in Brazil, and Seattle University in the US.
