I like to take the scientific approach.. With a 600 watt light, intensity starts to exponentially decline at about 18 inches. I notice as well that auxins (growth hormones) within the plant are redirected when foliage is removed. There is a genetic factor involved too... Personally I believe that to a certain point defoliation is almost necessity.
I'm not very familiar with Pineapple Express, but the strains I like to grow continually stretch, all the way to week 6 or 7. They respond quite well to defoliating, usually once at week about 21 days in and again at about day 42. Recovery is fast as its only leaf removal and typically I pull only the ugliest and smallest leaves. Most importantly IMHO is to not take too much at a time, avoid shocking your plant; add in an anti shock nutrient a day or two prior if you plan on going in there with scissors ready for war! I have seen defoliation increase yield dramatically, and also DECREASE yield.
I mean how the hell is a solar energy collection system (a plant) supposed to work if there are no solar panels (leaves)? You have to have the correct number of panels (leaves) to charge the battery (grow the plant), understand as well that when you pile panels on top of each other (a canopy) the lower panels are barely receiving any light and are running fairly inefficiently (especially under an HID)... There's a certain balance between finding the right amount of light and removing just the right amount of foliage that many growers spend years trying to perfect it.
I say listen to your plants, if they are willing to take it, DO IT! You'll have less under developed low growth and more fully developed top colas, possibly larger than what you're used to. If you have the space, cut two clones, defoliate one and not the other.... use the same variables otherwise, that's what I did when I got tired of listening to everyone argue about it!
Its a LONG winded subject and there is no RIGHT answer, experience has been my best teacher! Check into some of the "Defoliation" threads here on RIU, once you get past all the shit talking, there is a lot of very valuable information!
I hope I helped!

Tonight is day 21 so im going to do what ive always done and clean it up. Like you suggested it a necessity to do it in my grow since everything is so tight in there. Maybe not in outdoor but for my situation it needs to be done. pics to come

Day 22 Flowering

I could see right through the plants when i cleaned em up a few days ago, not anymore! They responded very well, more so than any other strain ive done this to. Very aggressive re-leafing.

Day 26 Flower

Bud progress is a little smaller than previous grows but remember I flowered these girls at 6 inches.... So imo they're really like day 16-17 flowering based on maturity if that makes any sense. They've grown imo 300+% since inducing flowering, to be honest if i vegged any longer i would have run out of head space. Amazing strains. Spectacular. The trichs are starting to produce slowly but surely. Winter is coming.

The bottom left plant is actually fruity chronic juice, look at her bud structure, nice tight internodes which will produce a very nice looking donkey dick cola in 40 days'ish. Can't wait. So stoked.

Ive done a bit of research on the 11/13 photoperiod for sativa doms, think i might try it, any thoughts? Even DJ short says to do it, says it brings out pheno traits that don't show in 12.12

I've read that 11/13 is great for some sativa strains, but I personally run indica dominant, so I have no experience with it. IMHO it's worth a shot!

have those thousands tried it?.... Doubtful.... I've always lived by the "don't knock til you try it" outlook

It's been 32 days since I flipped the lights on those little girls, now they're getting all womanly...and they stink. They're still pretty small compared to a mature plant put into flowering but I'm confident they will end up being fat. Time will tell. Pic 2 and 8(last) in the attached thumbnails under the big pics is the short, compact, sativa dominant Pineapple Express, shitty pics but it actually has the fattest buds out of all of em. Hard to get back in that corner. I'll also be starting 11/13 to see if i get any better results.

Also for anyone else whos silently watching and is interested in my flowering Dyna-gro recipe its as follows,

5ml/gal Grow, 5ml/gal Bloom, 5ml/gal Pro-Tekt, 1ml/gal Mag-pro, 1 scoop Great White. On a fresh res it takes my 8.0 ph water to 5.9ph and reads low 700's PPM @ .5 conversion.

I just started using great white as a combatant to bad bene's intead of using Dutch master Zone which i didnt like using since it smelled like pool water lol. Working out great so far. Love the stuff.

I feel like the plants are twice as smelly as they were 2 days ago when i switched to 11/13. Might be wishful thinking but the shit is stinky as fuck lol

so its been about a week since i started 11/13 and can't say whether or not it did anything lol. No real increased visible growth and no real changes in terms of "pheno expression". Thinking about going back to 12/12 but i don't want to risk stressing them so ill just run it to the end. New update soon

nice!

G13 labs PX? mine was a keeper from 2008ish. everyones fave to this day. smells like gummy bears, and oily hash and haze. super crystal even underneath the leaves and easiest to trim. tried 20 new varieties and PX is here forever.
