Pc case design (includes sketch)

Here is my first Pc case design. Still haven't built it, but I obtained all the necessary equipment. Got a few question for the experienced growers out there. But first, here are the features I plan to add

pc.jpg

Features:

  • White spray paint all sides
  • 4 X 13W CFLs
  • Reflective car shade on top (and to cover up holes)
  • 140mm intake fan, 3X 80 mm exhaust fans ( environment is pretty hot…)
  • Plastic mesh (scrog) (1” sqr spaces), sits 8” above top of pot

Questions:

  1. Has anyone tried Velcro to hang the power/light fixture? Suggestions?
  2. Bought a couple of bags of active carbon…whats a good way to model a filter for this setup?
  3. Should the odor filter sit inside or outside the case?
  4. This setup will result in 3 cables sticking out of the case ( 1 light, 1 intake, 1 exhaust). Any suggestions on wiring?
  5. Pot is 10” wide and 3” high…comments?
  6. Was thinking about using autoflower for scrog…will that work??
  7. Current lighting enough??
Add any more comments you have. Thanks.

1. look to 4

2.
Ive seen people make carbon filters for a small setup like this by using 2 wire pencil holder cups and panyhose.

3.My current grow is a lot bigger and I felt that the exhaust should be outside as to not waste any space. If your worried about people seeing the carbon filter then I would put it on the back.

4.As far as wiring the two fans I assume are being run off of the pc power supply. The pc case can probably be drilled through and then sealed to accommodate the hole for the extension cord power screwing in your extension cord so you dont have to velcro it. The last thing you want to worry about is your lights falling on your plants.

5. How many plants are you trying to grow?

6.I have no experience with either scrog or autoflower

7.According to Jorge Cervantes In Marijuana Grow Basics

55- 65 watts will 12 X 12

80-120 watts will cover 24 x 24 in

150- 200 watts 30 x 30 in.

Since it will be farther away till it reaches the screen the higher the wattage the better.
I would look into using one higher wattage bulb instead of many. The space is so small that the coverage of one or two higher watt cfls would be fine and it would also eliminate excess heat and clutter from excess electronics/bulbs. At home depot they sell 200watt and 300 watt cfls. You could also do 2 100 watt cfls in both spectrums. I have also seen people do 70 watt HID lighting in large pc cases. something you might want to look into.

Thanks for your response chipmunkproof.

  • I was thinking about using food strainers instead of pencil cup holders to make them smaller.
  • Im gonna start with 1 autoflowering since its my first grow and space is limited. But I read some threads around here and doesn’t seem that you can Scrog an autoflowering plant. So I decided to LST it and leave the lights on 24/7.
  • With the power chord I have, it seems that it will fit 2 X 23 W CFL and 1X13 W CFL in between. That’s 59 W total. Also, Im gona keep the pot at a raised level, 2” away from the lights the whole time….
Ill post a pic of the final setup once built…I am still missing the main ingredient of this whole project -_-

Your design appears to be good, get as much light as possible. Heat build up shouldnt be too bad with them fans in there, and an AF will fit just fine in that space, just LST the f*** out of it, keep it real short and bushy :D what strain you going with?Top69 is a good AF if your looking too keep it short.

When you buy velco, it usually has adhesive on one side. If the temp is too much, it will release and fall on your plants. Burning the poor babies

  1. velcro is shitty to hang lights because if it gets hot it will fall off and kill your plants. happened to me as a noob, dont do it.
  2. instead of doing that go to your local hydro store and buy onagel, its comes in a little container that you put in your grow op and kills all smells, works extremely well, especially for a grow so dang small
  3. run them to a power block then have that coming out of the pc box out the top or bottom so it looks like a normal computer power cable coming out the back. after all stealth is why your doing this right?
  4. when space is an issue you want to keep your plants size to a minimum. you can do this by restricting their root mass, (not transplanting them into a bigger pot and leaving them in a small pot) if i was you id do some measurements and find out how many pots you can fit in there and spray them with "spin-out". it will allow you to keep the pot size smaller and still have your roots develop
  5. autoflowers would be perfect for something like what your doing.
  6. your going to need more light forsure, atleast a couple 40w cfl's

Thanks for the info!
Here are some pics of the on going project. still got a few things to fix.
pc in.JPGpc back.JPGpc front.JPG
- I just jammed in the light fixture between the metal. doesnt seem like it's going anywhere. added glue and tape just in case.

-Soil is just standard flower potting soil (german made). Was gona mix my own. Managed to find peat moss, compost, perlite, and sand. No vermiculite. Might try my own mix for the second attempt.

- Lights are 23W, 15W, 23W (61W total) CFLs. 6400K.

- blue fan is 140mm intake. But is not so efficient because it is blocked from behind.

-Top left is exhaust and bottom left is intake. covered them with a sock to block some of the light, but it doesnt seem to be enough. I've read somewhere that people use Pipe Elbows with the fan to block the light. Might look into that.

- Highest temp location is at the top right. gets up to a max of 100F when the room AC is off and to 90F with the room AC On. So i plan to keep the AC on whenever the lights are on.

-I'm currently germinating a random seed. so i have no idea what strain it's going to be. seeds are hard to find where I'm at....

-Plan on planting one plant at a time and LSTing. is this pot too big for the space?

- If I can find onagel, ill definitely try it...

* more suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Temps are way too hot my man, try running both fans as exhaust and worry less about intake at this point. As far as onager, try ebay

i always read intake never really need a fan, a passive intake works fine - create negative pressure with the exhaust and it will pull the air.

I would just use one 56 watt bulb or a 100 watt bulb instead of three bulbs. The cfls are creating too much heat for that space. You could also get a piece of glass and put it under the bulbs to create a sort of sealed hood. This would more effieciently cool the bulbs and cut down on the heat in the grow while reducing smell. It would also protect the plant from the light, even though it is a cfl they can burn plants trust me.

Planted an Easy Bud (autoflowring plant) from Royal Queen Seeds exactly one week ago, but the plant is soo tiny. it's barely 1" tall. there seems to be slow growth (progress in pix). and the leaves seem to be getting darker everyday. also, notice the purple stem with the white hairs....
would like to hear some tips from you experts out there. do you think there is stunned growth??? here is my inputs:

* I water the whole pot with 330 ml bottled (drinking) water every 48 hours. and spray the top every 24 hours.
* PH is at 6.5.
* Plant is about 4" from the lights. (69 watts clfs)
* temps range from 70-85 (night, day). sometimes reaching 90 when I have close the vents for more stealth.
* Had a humidity dome for the first 24 hours, but removed it fearing that it would lead to fungus.
