im trying to understand these things... i dont think i give these things an adequate environment. im told they like warmth, humidity, and hight indirect light... but even that doesnt work for me. i always buy them for 3 bucks at the local lowes when i see them but i cant get them to flower. just survive...

Haha. One of my favorite flowers. I don't think there's an orchid I don't like. It's one of the largest plant families in the plant kingdom and there are orchid species in almost all parts of the world including the antarctic.
The plants you buy at the home center stores are usually easy to raise. I like the moth orchids or Phalaenopsis sp. They can be grown in anywhere from 52F to 90 something but figure a little cooler than that. It's not the temperature you need to worry about.
Buy moth orchids according to the texture and color of their leaves. You want tough leathery dark green leaves that are turgid and well hydrated. If the leaf is collapsed, if it's off color, if it's wrinkled looking...pass over it. Similarly, if the roots are dark and mushy instead of firm and bright green, don't buy it. Home center stores are notorious for over watering orchids because their staff don't
know any better. You can kill an orchid faster through over watering than anything else.
The best advice I can give you is to know what species you have and google some information on it.
There's a cool saying I learned that stuck in my head about care of orchids. "feed weakly weekly".
Scott's makes a foliar spray now, I just bought it myself, for feeding. But you can also buy the cheaper powder that you mix with water. Just follow the rate instructions. Feed in the growing season of the plant and not so much in the dormant season. That's it. If you need any help take some pix, post them, and I'll take a look.
