Has anyone had personal experiences of being charged and having online evidence used against you? If so, share your story

They can take your computer and use it against you. You can't format it, if you want your information gone literally have to smash your hard drive to bits. Basically its evidence and can be used against you.

Not me personally. But I've known several people who have received warnings.

As for this site, afaik, it's hosted in L.A., California and is subject to state, federal, and international laws.

In all likelyhood if you face this, they will have obtained the means to collect that evidence from your own pc..
There are hdd erasers out there, and NSA standards are sufficient.. Being the computer geek that I am, I use one I made myself.. I used existing data-pass algorithms though since they are proven..
CC Cleaner or the like are always good to have (it collects/shreds typical internet application tracks conveniently).. But your Documents And Settings folder or equivalent is really good to be familiar with in Windows Explorer itself.. I use an explorer replacement called 2xExplorer that is pretty powerful, and has a convenient shredding feature built into the standalone exe.. Convenient since any files you need gone need to be shredded.. BUT BEWARE this shredder, and pretty much anything else I've found leaves filenames of shredded files intact/recoverable.. Also beware that typical cache cleaning leaves the data wholly intact.. Shredding is fine when you need files gone, but freespace wiping is another consideration since you don't know what apps have deleted insecurely themselves..
To be sure you know where applications may drop incriminating info on your disk you can get a program called Filemon.exe to observe its behavior.. Same goes for the registry with Regmon.exe.. Its worth noting that there are API calls applications can make that result in no record of the event in those applications.. This is typically only applied for registration security though..
Now the pagefile.sys.. This can hold incriminating info for ages, and there aren't many ways to clean it.. Turning off virtual memory is an option but not a good one for most systems.. A simple registry modification can clear that at system shutdown, and rebuild it from scratch at startup..

If you want to clean those tracks totally you should wipe free space after a clean restart with that option set..
Lastly the Recycle Bin.. DON'T USE IT! Its a funny beast.. It stores intact files even after its been emptied.. To see what I mean you need to to to the Recycled folder in a dos prompt window.. You'll need to use dir/a to see alot of hidden stuff in dos that no windows app will typically displaybecause of special folders, and desktop.ini's and whatnot.. If the files are there intact with funny names, then they will still be there after a free-space wipe.. Delete anything in there from the dos window, wipe your free-space and never put anything in there again..
I'm not saying everybody should be this psychotic all the time, but I've put alot of thought into security, and figure it can't hurt to share..

I can't vouche for that since I'm not the type to pay for shareware.. IIRC correctly there were MANY limitations with the free version, but maybe I'm confusing it with another commercial one.. There were a couple of commercial ones that had fairly complete features, but got sick and tired of installing limited shareware after a while and just started looking into sourcecode repositories instead..
I'm skeptical of what it can clean in the swap file.. I'd love to try and find tracks myself after that program has been run..
If anybody tries that, plant something obscure to find, then clean, then hunt for it in a disk editor like Winhex's..

Bottom line if its reached the point where the authorities have your computer and are looking for shit chances are you're already screwed and they are just looking for the icing on the cake.

better yet...

wire an electromagnetic arc around your door

that way then the cops try to remove your computer it will be erased by degausing

you can wire in a bypass switch to turn it on or off

hdds have some pretty good sheilding.. They're encased in mu metal.. You'd need a pretty hefty field to do the trick, and then they'd bill you for all their destroyed electronic devices.. You'd be wiser to rig a self destruct in the drive-bay itself if you weren't just kidding in the first place..:)

Just wrap the hdd in a shitwhack of magnesium ribbon, with a way to ignite it via electrical arc heat.. Science still can't explain spontaneous silicon combustion..:) As for the door perimeter.. I can't think of a better place to install one of those sonic fences like they have on Lost..:)

You just absorb interesting technical stuff or do you have any formal education behind you??

both.....

although i went to school for formal education....

i've always claim to fame when to comes to self taught.

i was wiring up houses @ 13 y/o (data networking)...not to mention charging a nice fee

You're like me then.. I learn way more on my own, although my physics background gives me a toolset to do that (electronics/em theory, chemistry, etc and scientific conventions needed to harvest info from write-ups way out of my league).. Makes sense I suppose since it was MacGyver that guided me into physics in the first place..:)
Even when you're in school studying physics though you're constantly reminded that you aren't learning dick yet, they're just preparing you to learn..

I have no formal education. Therefore I think a string attached to the bottom of your computer which operates a trap door. It will lead to the hungry pool of sharks and alligators.

For the Mg ribbon 'joke' I agree.. Anybody who goes down for that for simple computer security needs to bitchslap their lawyer.. I'm pretty sure you aren't obligated to make sure the police have access to remnants of banking transactions, or medical data, or naked pictures of your wife in the anals of the hdd..
