I put the seeds that I'm germing on top of my T5s. They get plenty of warmth and I don't have to purchase a heating mat. Although I do in winter use a heating pad with some styrofoam placed on top so the don't get to warm.

@Native Humboldt try Los Angeles County if you really wanna bitch about power. Before my lights my base rate is $500.00, nothing really special either. We are looking at moving north and checked power rates, you guys run about 25% of us. My husband has spoken of NOTHING else but my lights after that..... sigh......

In honor of him I hung a new Plasma Light, watch that meter spin LOL
How can it be so much? That power down there is crazy do you have a pool and ac? They would have to pay me 10X that just to live there! lol I was there during the 92 riots in the military and saw the side of LA that most don't. Since then we fly into Disney and fly out every few years. You should move to Humboldt the weather stay mild all year and most of the people are great. A traffic jam is when you get stuck behind a tractor or row of dairy cows. lol

I was born and raised here, watched some of the progress of the Watt's riots from my roof. We are looking at moving your way when my husband retires. It is time to leave.

I know what you mean work and live there your whole life its time to get out of rat race and enjoy life. I worked at the Martin Luther King shopping center, Compton, and a couple weeks in Korea town. I got a pretty good tour of the area enough to know I didn't want to live there. Just remember if you move up this way you have at least 1 RIU friend in the area if not more. The grass is always greener in Humboldt!!

I have never lived in a big city, so the idea of paying that much for electric is scary. You add that onto the cost of rent out west, and you have the whole reason I am not living in CO right now. I had a job there a couple years ago, but couldn't find any place to rent. I can't afford 900-1200 in rent even getting payed a little more in those places.

This is how I do my part in screwing the power companies here in Cali. I installed 32 solar panels that crank over 7000 watts per hr into the grid from 11 am to 5 pm. Before 11 am and after 5 pm the power drops until they turn off. I can power 3 1000 watt lights with fans and pumps almost completely through out the year. I plan on installing more panels this year along with a wind turbine and possibly a fuel cell after that. I would love to power my indoor and green house completely with wind and solar then receive a check from those bustards at the end of the year even if its 1 cent!!!

I have seriously considered this but the Raven's I rescue and love are being decimated around here by the solar panels. You should see the mangled feet from the burns. The one mom I have left out of an unkindness of about 40 has terribly mangled feet in just the past year from them. I could cry and I do. So I can't bring myself to mount them on my roof.

That's truly a sad story I sure hope mine don't do that. I can't say that I have ever seen a bird on or around my panels, but I'm not normally looking at them either. I'll set up one of my game cameras up there this weekend so I can see if they land on the panels. There are so many trees around they normally stay away from my house.

WTF? Rent is not more expensive than the national average- certainly not given the quality of life get- and electrical power is available at some of the lowest rates in the country. We save on gas, too; who else is paying $2.939 a gallon for regular?

On second thought, stay home. We have too many people wanting to move here already.

I still can't get it through my thick skull:
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

One you don't want to learn the hard way: "don't go down stairs with your hands on your pockets"!!!

WOW- this is the very first I've heard of this. How are the crow's feet getting torn up/burned?

I'm saving up for a fuel cell. Converts natural gas- from whatever source- into electricity, heat and CO². I could use all of those, and it will cut your power bill by up to two thirds; instead of buying your BTus in electrical form, buy them as gas and it costs less than half as much. My thousand dollar power bill would amortize one of those babies in just a few years...

Hey Ty, I pay about that for gas this week, a little less last week actually about $2.59. Anyway I'm not saying its just more expensive out west...... bigger cities, nicer parts of town theres lots of pricey places. I just can't afford $8-900+ a month rent. I know that's fairly average at this point. I do think its kinda cold to tell me to just stay home, I'm a pretty nice guy :). Colorado would be blessed to have me move there lol.

I say that to weed out the whiners and wannabes.

It's not about cost of living, it's about what it buys in terms of quality of life. Some asshole could GIVE me a Fifth Avenue penthouse in lower Manhattan and I still wouldn't live there!

Yeah I have really mixed feelings. I can't blame folks for adopting it at all. The problem is where the beam focuses for the birds. It's that law of unintended consequences that always seems to bite us in the butt.
