First PM sent
Got the PM. just reading through the tweaks thread and found my new favorite quote.

the question was:

How can you tell what is really the problem?

Understanding what makes a plant tick, botany. Experience plays a big part, process of elimination, learning to read your plants.....there's no easy answer. What you don't want to do is after failing, you don't understand why your garden failed. There's nothing wrong with a screwed up garden as long as you can learn from the experience and correct your actions. Kinda like getting a divorce upon a failed marriage.....

This is what I am trying to do. Understand these things and learn from my mistakes and gain new knowledge that may prevent me from making the mistake in the first place.

Excellent thread Riddleme, I am going to look into the book for sure.

Peace,

Big

great thread subscribed +rep as well... can you check out my bureau grow in my signature and tell me what you think its my first grow sooo i would love the input thanks man and happy growing

scribed and I'll keep watching. I'm too cheap to buy weed let alone books(and I just don't have shelf space to keep buying books anymore), but I'm definitely in for good sound advice, and of course I keep having ideas I want to try, even if it turns out they don't work or are counter productive/a waste of my time, but as long as I get something to smoke out of it, it'll be fun.

Remembering that I'm ONLY about soil,,,,,,,

Here is another question for ya,

For a New Soil Grower which meter would be the most important to aquire,

A good PH meter or

A light meter that reads up to 10,000 lumens???

Please if you answer tell me why?

I'd say a Ph meter, because the acidity of the soil can instantly kill a plant if its to high. and although the lumens of a light is very important for growth as well, most lights tell you how many lumens they are when you buy them, so a light meter would be pointless for this purpose. hope this helps :D

ya i would agree with the soil ph meter. that acidity stuff sucks and the lumens of your lights is a big deal but i agree with wambat on that one you know the lumens when you buy the lights so waste of money....

From my research I am going to say a light meter. MJ is a very PH tolerant plant, So unless it is crazy out of wack your plants can take it. If you are able to "read" your plants, they will tell you when the PH is off. There are several respected growers on here that I think would agree.

If a plant does not have the correct light (to much/little) than your leaves will not be able to photosynthesize properly. There fore the salts(food) they are being fed will go unused
and you surely will not need a PH meter to tell the the results of that.

Just my opinion!

Another great thread on here is this one

https://www.rollitup.org/outdoor-growing/24703-its-all-bullsh-t.html

What I love most on here is how folks buy into the hyped up canna foods (nutes) and swear by them and argue mine is better.

I love to experiment, but I would rather find (discover) the more simple, less exspensive method or way of doing things.

When Uncle Ben mentioned Jack's Classic I found my nutes and since then I have seen several other converts switching to Jack's (I am following one of them) I would never argue that Jack's is the best but it gets the job done and only cost $5

The point of what I am telling you here is that UB and FDD's plants are great examples that prove you do not need to spend tons of money for better or bigger buds you simply have to know how to grow and when/how to use nutes. MJ absolutely does not care if there is a pretty picture on the bottle or if it cost more.

My girlfriend and I go to a place that sells a 16oz Porterhouse for $11.99
and it is way better than the place that sells one for $21.

Point is if you look long enough you can always do better, once you find better you can quit lookin

The best way, huh! Man that is a great question especially for a noob such as myself.

If your read through these threads you can find several different answers to this questions. Stick your finger in 1-2 inches and if its dry, water it? Buy a moisture meter and learn to trust it? And the ever popular, water when the pot feels light.

IMO I thinks it boils down to what works for each individual as long as it is getting the job done correctly. We all know what UB's post about Water Stress and the effects of it. If not read it and it will answer allot of your question's. I myself am still trying to fine tune my technique and find that fine line of not to much and not to little. I have found what the results of to much causes for sure!:dunce:
Again as UB say's. "Learn to read em".

Thanx again for a great thread Riddleme.

Peace

Great thread riddleme. You continue to impress me. +rep man. And Im definitely following and subscribed. Ill get on those other threads in a bit and find things.

As for watering. Stick a finger about an inch or so in and feel for moister. And you should be able to lift the pot and feel the difference. When its dry, then water it gradually till maybe a drop or a few come out the bottom. Lift that and feel the weight difference and thats generally how much you should water it. And the ability to read the plants as well, as the plant grows more, itll need more water and might possibly need it on a shorter watering schedule

So far you are reflecting what everyone in the forum says

minus the UB (proper reference) Learn to read em mantra

which is correct just not complete :bigjoint:

There was a hint in the first PM

GET A GROW UNDER YOUR BELT BEFORE EVER WORRYING ABOUT YEILD!

MJ is a weed it will grow anywhere, under any light, in any dirt, with very little water.

-----------------------------------------------

Ask yourself, WHAT WOULD MOTHER NATURE DO?

Does she know the ph of her rain water?
Are the light cycles constant?
Does she add Nutes?
Does she add mollases?
Are there light leaks? Does she "hide" the moon to stop hermies?

------------------------------------------------

understand that you can go up to a week without watering again, in fact do it on purpose because this will let you see the plant tell you it is thirsty and teach you how to understand the plant as it says what it wants

read enough to know that if they are stretching you need to move the lights closer

-------------------------------------------------

start over and learn from our mistakes.

and don't stress over it, simply do it, watch it and learn

Once you get that first grow out of the way start playing with the tweaks, slowly and easily.

And here is some advice you may never hear :bigjoint: experiment on your males!!! I see all the time post asking are males good for anything,, the answer is YES they can be smoked (they have thc too) you can collect pollen and make seeds, you can create your own breed and you can PRACTICE topping, LST, supercropping without worrying about causing any harm

----------------------------------------------------

growing should be related to relaxing, don't stress, fret or worry

One more bit of advice, with relation to strains a VERY BIG NooB mistake is to grow more than one strain at a time as they act and respond differently to things. Do one strain at a time till you learn it, then learn another one. Once you KNOW them it is ok to grow as many as you want together

Good Luck

Man. You hit it all on the head. I quoted basically the best things and the basics that everyone should know. Ive been thinking the same exact stuff but never posted a thread or anything on it cause I'm new and don't wanna be criticized.

But that's exactly what I'm doing with my first grow that's in my signature. I'm growing it for fun and to learn from it. I don't expect much yield from it. And especially if it turns out to be a male. Why waste it, why not try new things on it. And they still do produce, small buds, and just THC on the leaves. And not watering for a week and seeing how it reacts and tells you that it needs water it a great idea and I'm definitely gonna do that now.

Also with mother nature. I mean, there's acid rain! and naturally growing weed can take it and low nutrient soil. I mean, even on cloudy days, UV rays come through, and are even magnified but still, the times the sun is up and shinning down will vary, and the moon, especially a full moon, will reflect a lot of light. SO the light leak isn't such a big deal.

Its easier to grow then most think. Thank you riddleme

And you may find this funny. Was thinking about it as I read this thread. Riddleme, you kind of remind me of UB's Plato or Aristotle. How Socrates never wrote his work down but Plato was his student, wrote all his teachings down and spread the word along with teaching others, such as Aristotle.

Let me explain a few things

I'm in my 50's kinda set in my ways. I grew many moons ago but back then there was not an internet or fancy nutes or fancy lights, hell we actually climbed a light pole (street light) and took it to use in our grow room God it was bright in that basement. Black paint on windows glowed.

That being said when the medical thing happened I decided to get back into it and I ended up here and well you know I read a lot. But of every thing I read by UB made the most sense to me so I followed his mantras in my grow, still experimenting of course (that's me)

When I saw what happened in my grow it was because of the UB mantras that I understood it, and once that clicked for me it was Katy bar the door, we're off. Hell I couldn't sleep the night I realized what I had learned.

When I spoke with UB and he comfirmed it I was on fire with pure joy but he also told me that he had been posting for 14 years and few folks got it. Since years ago I used to teach I figured I could come up with a lesson plan that would help others put it all together the way I did and that is why we're here.

And once it clicks for all of you I promise you will be amazed at how simple it is :bigjoint:

Generally, just keep the soil moist, but not drenched to cut off the oxygen/gas exchange between the roots and the soil. Wet/dry cycles are NOT good!!! The issue is not overwatering, it's watering to the point of the exclusion of air. Too much water will stop this gas exchange and can damage the root and cause rotting. And trying to add nutes to the plant with the water while a person sees the leaves dropping and all just damages the plant more since the problem is just over watering. Under watering on the other hand. If the pot is light to lift rather than decently heavy went it's watered, and the soil is dry, it's time to water and make the watering cycle closer to each other. And if bad enough, water from the bottom up till it reaches an equal moister consistency. But when watering, add enough till there's a good runoff. Dont wait until the soil is chalk dry or the leaves droop before watering

- Uncle ben's gardening tweeks
- plant moisture stress

Happy gardening,
Uncle Ben

I haven't read all of the UB threads yet and I'm not sure when i'll get to it, but I'd say do it before the fan leaf stems go limp. It's part of reading the plant. I also recall something about watching for trans something or other... leaves fold up it means it's too wet, leaves fold down it means it's thirsty (I think... I had a tab open to it but my browser crashed)

Called tranpiration and you stated it oppisite of what it is

Leafs fold down or under is lots of water, trying to stop transpirring
think of it as if you and I are cold

leafs folding up is transpirring hard (also related to heat stress) think of it as if you and I are sweating
