My understanding is that DOT was not in charge of this project. The school was heading it up. Obviously needed a little more oversight.I hope they bring criminal charges against someone and actually jail them not just let them off with a fine like they usually do.

Gov'ts, civil institutions, educational institutions. They can't help themselves, seriously. They must make it a work of art for show: "this is how we spend your money" to the donors, taxpayers, etc. Then they can also brag about it, use it on resumes, etc. These things are not merely for efficiency/utility; it's got to be "significant" for bragging rights. Most of us know a steel 8 ft wide catwalk would be perfect: utilitarian, cheaper, much quicker to build and less prone to faults; problem is that it's ugly and no one wants to brag about it

I had Lego when I was a kid. This was back when you could get any shape Lego you wanted, so long as it was a rectangular prism. This was before all the custom shapes and little Leganthropus figurines that, to my parochial view, are just cheating.
With every piece rectangular, Lego was arguably a digital toy. You built solids made of indivisible minimal rectangular prisms; the art was one of approximation to make your finished product less "minecraft-y" looking. It was all in how you arranged those tiny blocks. One might be tempted to call the minimal units "bloxels" ...
Now Lego has all these custom shapes so you can build tiny X-wings with those crescent-tipped blasters and a movie-true canopy. I think this is decadent, but that is surely just me expressing a curmudgeonly sentiment, a variation on "things were better when they were worse".

I agree. The new kits are a big part of the companies problems. Sure it picked up sales on the short term,but without the whole you can build anything you can imagine thing, lego is just another chunk of plastic.
