new growth burnt

well I thought I had experienced pretty much every problem you could have - but I haven't seen this one before. new growth coming up FRIED! my best guess is my soil mix was too hot because it didn't sit long enough, and/or I didn't mix it up thoroughly enough and my roots hit a hot spot. anybody had this or recognize it? water ph is 7, soil I don't know, just know the other plants love it.

hahahaha flush flush - yeah the problem is that the plant is in clay - there's nowhere for runoff to go. would you use clearex or something in that case?
