Need some advice

1. I am having a huge issue on how to germinate a seed for hydro. I have used the napkin method and when the root is about 1/4 inch I transfer it to a rockwool cube it just does not grow. Any one know how to germinate in a rockwool cube or am I doing something wrong.

1.A. Anyone have a sure way to germinate from seed for hydro?

2. I am using a 5gallon bucket with a 4 inch net pot I put about 1 1/2 to 2 inches of hyroton at the bottom and then place the rockwool cube with the 1/4 rooted seedling in and fill with hydroton. My question is, should the water level be under the net pot or how far into the water should the net pot be?

I am trying DWC with a 5 gallon bucket, have two air stones making plenty of bubbles, the ph is kept between 5.5 and 6.5, and I am not using any nutrients till I get a few sets of true leaves. I am runing 2 or 4 T5 bulbs.

answer 1 and 1A, Soak your rockwool cubes in ph'd water for a couple of hours then pop your seed\seedling
into the rockwool(give the rockwool a gentle squeeze to rid it of exesse water) then put it into your pots without the hydroton in them

answer 2. the water line needs to be high enough for the rockwool to soak up the water untill the roots have developed a few inches,
once you start to see some roots sprouting from the rockwool take ur rockwool cubes out, drop some pebbles in then the rockwool then pebbles.

Make sure ur water line in an inch or so up the side of the baskets to start with so the roots\rockwool are still getting lots of water.

keep an eye on the roots, as they begin to grow and start to trail under the basket you can lower the water line to an inch or so under the basket
ONCE you have some good roots to take up nutrients.

i personaly used canna's rhizotonic when they had first sprouted use half strength for first week then full strength second week

i'm not saying canna's range is better its just what a friend and i use and we dont have any problems with it.

i personaly use rhizotonic(not every feed)\advanced nutrients G\M\B and hammerhead for bloom.
i also add superthrive every other week and use some oxy-plus in between to help keep things sterile an fresh.

i'm currently growing super lemon haze(started in rockwool) from G.H.S that are in there fourth week of budding
and looking great no def's no real problems at all(except im running out of height lol)

hope this helped in some little way :-)

If I start the seed in the rockwool cube then place it in the garden with out hydroton, should I worry about algae? Forzaitaly1 I thought about starting it in the rockwool cube but was not sure If I had to keep it in a incubator first which I do not have, but I imagine I can make one out of a 2 litter bottle. Then wait for some kind of root then move to the bucket. nazarethjay, I have to keep the water level into the cube, so the splash from the bubbles is not enough for it to take root?

I am new to DWC/hydroponics, but have completed a few with soil. This is proving to be a little more difficult than I first thought.

Thanks a lot, good luck with the lemon haze, you should post some pics.https://www.rollitup.org/members/nazarethjay-183823.html

Hi,
you shouldn't need to worry about algae for the first week, at least untill there is some roots showing
then put them into the pots with hydroton around the cube make sure no light goes into the res.

you can have the water level just under the pots aslong as you can see the hydroton getting wet from the bubbles and your sure that the water will reach the roots
if your unsure just have the water level 1\4 inch from the bottem of the pots.
Once you can see the roots in the water you can lower it a little just make sure they can drink.
aslong as your p.h is ok and the water is warm(18-22) you should be fine.

once you've got a couple of leaves think about a gentle seedling\cloning nute to use or 1\8 strength normal grow nute.

As long as u have well developed roots U won't have any issues. Keep the PH close to 6, don't let ur rockwool cubes absorb TOO much water(roots don't develope, Or develope very slowly), get them roots to run about 1.5 to 2 inches outta the cubes then ur good for ur hydro.

Theres thiese things called quick rooters or something like that.. tiny lil plug like soil (Rapid Rooter)
put seed in... let the roots come outs of bottom in time then put RIGHT in yer hydro medium (rocks etc)

Ye but I always like my roots to grow and attach into something for the plants stability. Good stuff thou

Thanks guys

The problem I am having is going from seed to roots then bucket. I am having the hugest problem rooting the seeds. I keep them in a baggy till I get a nice root about 1/2 inch or so, form there I am lost. I was told to place them in the bucket and keep water up against the pot but they never root, and eventually die.

I do not know what or where to keep them in till they root out of the cube. I place the seedling with about a half inch root in to the rockwool then??? ....... Could anyone tell me where or what to do to get roots out of the cube, before I place them in the bucket.

Thanks in advance to any one who can help me out, sorry in advance to anyone if I am to new to this. Everyone here seems to be very patient and real cool, unlike some of the other forums, which I was basically booted out for being to new.

Dude forget all this little steps and stages.
First u plant ur seed in ur rockwool cube then when rooted and roots got long(2 inches outta the cube) then do whatever u want with them, Its hard to kill a well rooted clone if u do things right. All they need is a small source of water close by then they grow towards it. over.

Its getting it rooted in the cube that I am lost at I germinate the seed put it in the cube that has been in ph'd water and I squeeze out the excess water. Then I do not know where to put it or what to do to get it to root in the cube?
