Need RSO Advice

I made a batch of "RSO". I used 99.9 ISO and 1 oz of good well trimmed, decarbed bud. I read in several places that I should expect 3-5 grams yield...I ended up with 17 grams. Followed the directions and cooked it down adding a dropper full of water at the end and cooking that off. There are absolutely no bubbles in the stuff after 4-5 hours on a coffee cup warmer. At room temperature, it stays liquid...put in the refrigerator and it stiffens up immediately. Hard to weigh out dose when it is liquid and hard to force it through a syringe when its cold. I'm certain all the iso and water are gone. So why do I have 17 grams instead of 3-5? Any ideas on where I went wrong?

17 grams divded by 28.3 grams, is about 60% yield, with a typical yield closer to 25% from typical trimmed bud. Given that you are using a coffee warmer for purging, I infer that what you have is residual iso.
Ok...Thanks for the reply. I reheated for about 4 hrs @ 220 and managed to cook off another 5 grams of something. It is thicker but still liquid at room temp. As an experiment, I put the same amount of iso in a tin next to the oil and it boiled off in 5 minutes so it is hard to imagine any iso to be left in the oil after the additional 4 hrs. @ 220.

It forms an azeotrope with the essential oil, which has a higher boiling point, but 4 hrs at 220F should ostensibly do even water. Do you have an accurate immersion thermometer that you can measure the temperature of the oil as it sits at 220F???

What does it do when you stick it in a 0C freezer?

42% yield is still unreasonably high, and in my dotage I no longer believe in magic, so lets look at sources of extra weight besides residual solvent.

Water, bad scale, bad measurement are the three to eliminate first. The 0C check should tell if it is water.

What does it smell and taste like when dabbed? One small dab won't kill you. Can you taste or smell Iso?

Agree there are several possible variables and I will fiddle with them. For now, I'm tired if screwing around with this batch so I added an oz of everclear to make a tincture.

1. As for equipment: my 2 scales are on the money. I have little confidence in the several temperature measuring devices I have that vary a bunch from one to another...I may purchase a infrared thermometer gun.
2. Due to the fact that when I place a tin full of iso next to the tin of co and it burns off totally in 5 minutes...and then look at a fatal dose of iso being approx. 8oz...and then consider that I'll never take more than 10 drops of this tincture at a time, I figure I'm OK. But I bet I get an A for writing poorly punctuated, run on sentences.
