no can only sign on as guest
meh, the user profile is prolly corrupted

shut it all the way down, unplug it, and pull the battery.
wait a few seconds then plug it back in and start mashing the F5 key until you get the safe mode prompt.
it should offer you the option to log in as "Administrator" then you can delete your old user profile and make a fresh one.
make sure to give your new account admin privileges before you restart in normal mode.
restart into normal mode, log in with your new profile and youre golden.

What he said. And if that doesn't work I'll send you a copy of windows and you can just wipe your computer assuming you don't have anything you really would hate loosing.

one of my nephew's friends had the same trouble.

heres what i have discovered about win 8:

1 ) to get to the "advanced startup options" including safe mode, the recovery console, command prompt and restore applications to wipe your drive and reset your OS you have to open the "shut down" menu button on the login screen, HOLD SHIFT and select restart, then youll get the "advanced options" at reboot.

2 ) the "advanced options" are pretty fucking useless unless you want to format and reinstall, which you can do by booting from the dvd drive with the windows install disc inside.

3 ) the "Safe Mode" option is nested in a menu tree, and when you drill down to the "start in safe mode" menu option you will discover that the "menu" is actually a LIST, and you cant start in safe mode from here. the only active interface options on that menu are "back" and "restart" which IN THEORY will reboot your computer using the Thuper Theekrit , Thuper Thpeshul, Thuper Advanced boot options, which on his computer resulted in a black screen and no boot, so you gotta pull the plug and try again by once again holding shift and restarting from the login screen to get back to the "advanced" boot options

4 ) the "command prompt" button also resulted in a black screen, pulling the plug, restarting, holding shift, and restarting again.

5 ) "fix problems that prevent windows from starting": another black screen, hard reboot, soft reboot while holding shift, try another option in the advanced menu

6 ) ALLEGEDLY if you hold down the RIGHT shift key (only the right one works, in theory) and mash F8 you can jump right to the advanced startup option menu (but not the Thuper Theekrit ones) without the "hold shift and select restart from login" nonsense, but in reality, it doesnt matter which shift key you hold down, or how hard you mash F8, cuz that shit doesnt work either.
the only reliable way to get to the actual administration utilities to fix the perplexingly common "user profile corrupted" bullshit is to do it from the desktop by ordering it to reboot in safe mode with MSconfig (which actually works, if you can log in...)

Conclusion: windows 8 is junk. make a recovery media disc the moment you get it out of the box, and save your files on secondary HDD, cuz youll prolly have to re-format that piece of shit on the weekly. none of the admin tools actually work, and you have to jump through hoops to even see a LIST of the options you could use if only you could boot to the desktop, which you cant, unless you can log in, and the computer is working, in which case you dont need to use them anyhow.

win 8 offers you a lot of "helpful" advice and eagerly tells you about all the groovy tools you could use to fix your computer, if your only computer were working.
