Sounds like you've solved the mystery. I imagine the smell from a burnt out ballast could stink up a small room for days. I wouldn't worry about the lingering smell, it'll go away soon enough. Glad to see you're getting your stuff back in order. You should go get a massage or something after that stress bender.
