its like if you had a red hot piece of iron and you were branding a piece of wood....

I also went on top of my house and the smell comes from the chimney also..
and the smell is stronger in the grow room even with the door being open for more than 12 hrs

Do you use your chimney? meaning an open fire? Even so if your chimney stack gets hot you could have a rotting animal down there.

nope, its just an exhaust for the house/furnace.....

still though, the smell is mainly from the grow area, thats why I think its electrical.... if its not after the checks shit out then Im gonna take my equipment to the hydro store and see if they can check some shit out 4 me

hay man, seeing as u've done all you can on your own. and your calling an elect. I won't venture to figure out your problem. Just keep in mind your house and ladies are save and sound... fires can seem much worse than they really end up being. we use a wood furnace and twice now I have come home thinking my grow room was bout to be gobbled up by flames...just to find a chimney fire (when the silt builds up in your chimney it blocks smoke form escaping and begins to burn) It smells like shit and emits awesome amounts of smoke. But each time we were able to put it out on our own without any professional help.

It's really scary I know, just remember to keep your head in these situations... Best of luck to you and your whore (god she's sexy)lol.

yeah, thanks for your help, kind words like that are somewhat needed at times like these when you get your panties all twisted and shit, my dad is taking care of the electrician while Im here at work, if they say that the electrical side is alright, then Ill be going to the grow shop.... I called them and they said that they would test my ballast for me...

damn Im glad im getting somewhere finally

you know how sapce heaters give off that somewhat "burny" smell.....
good, hold that thought

I told my dad to tell the guy (if he asked what was plugged in) that a space heater was plugged in and an xbox so.....

I call my dad and the electrition is is still there so I asked him what the issue finally was..... now heres the shitty part

dad tells him the heater was plugged in, so they plug the heater in, then they come to the conclusion that the space heater is giving off the smell!!!!

how dumb, the space heater hasnt been plugged in for 2 months!!!!!!!
they said nothing was wrong w/ our wiring.... I personally think there is, they left thinking it was the space-heater, therefore they prolly didnt even do a full inspection. Im so pissed right now..

The only way I will be satisfied is if the ballast for the light went bad, that way I will know for sure what the problem is, taking it to our local grow shop to have it checked..... Ill get back tomorrow to share the details...

but I will be here for a little longer so if you have any suggestions, please share, Im so bummed right now, Ive got 5 new 10in clones that have mass roots already and I have nowhere to put them except under shit flouros and cfl's

i dont know if you have done this already, but go check your ballasts and see if they smell. usually when something electrical burns up, it smells big time, even when not in use. although from the way you described it, it doesnt sound like something electrical is burning, rather something electrical is getting hot and burning something else, like the framewoprk of your house

I think that you should check the most important things first. 1st the place you staying. i think you should test every switch and socket in your house with an appliance to see if anything electrical is internally damaged. test them out one by one if you find the smell you find the spot. 2nd check your grow gear one by one plug it in at a friends or something and again if you find the smell you find the problem. Defenatly seems like something electrical in the house changed after constant heat because of the wood burning smell. Start by turning everything off the turn things on one by one and see which one acts unusual

i don't know weather to laugh or cry. that's some hella fucked up funny shit my friend. well if the electrician didn't think the house was burning done i guess that part is good. but he did smell it. now you still have to find it. i hate trying to find smells. my nose isn't that great to begin with. :peace:

Most wiring in a house won't burn up. Usually breakers are set at around 15 amps. I'm not a 100% sure but I believe a 1k hps runs about 9 amps. Usually you will trip a breaker before the wiring in the walls melt. To be safe I would remove your project and get an electrician over there. Usually plastics leave a lingering scent when they burn. From experience toasting amps in cars all you have to do is smell an amp even after a month you can still smell the burnt up stuff inside. If an electrician asks if you were running anything that pulls juice I would just tell him you were running an air compressor or something earlier in the week. Don't sweat it dude, you did the right thing. I would definately get it looked at though, cause your life ain't worth that. Hope for the best for ya....and if i remember right you had a 400 or a 600...stick with those jewels "f" that 1k hps.

Damn, I didn't read page 5. I would get another electrician out there if the ballasts are good.

the smell is still lingering..... but it is very faint..

last night when I got home I called the electrician back and explained to hime that I KNEW that the issue was not the heater since it hadnt been plugged in for at least a week...

he said he would come back this afternoon sometime and double check things.....

I REALLY hope that he says nothing is wrong!!!

Today, Im having a friend take my ballast to the hydro shop to get it tested, I didnt make it there last nigh as my boss wanted a meeting w/ me at 6 and the store closed at 7..... not enough time.

If it is the ballast, Ill call the electrician back and cancel his appt.

The light that was being used at the time of the odor was a sun-system set-up, where there is 1/ 400hps and 1/ 400 mh we were only using the hps...

in the winter when I did 12 plants we were using the 1000w and the 400w
so shit, if they didnt melt then, I dont see how they would now....................................................................................

You can get an outlet tester at your local harware store...checks for continuitty bad ground reverse polarity..realativly cheap 5 bucks give or take a couple bucks..easy to use dont need to be a rocket scientist to use it
if it smells like wood its probably inside the wall or attic or crawl space.. staple's electricians use to attach wiring to your houses studs might be arcing..
hope everthing ends up ok....Do you own the house? dont call fire department...get an electrician
If you rent tell your landlord..to get you an electrician..I would be paranoid to...not for my plants...id be paraniod about waking up dead..
If you dont do anything and you have a fire...your busted

Good point. If you didn't have a problem with a 400 & a 1,000, why would there be a problem now. I guess a mouse could have chewed threw a wire but my moneys on the burnt out ballast senario. Did you buy the equipment new or used, and when? (just curious) ;)

I can tell you as an electrician that every time I've had to work on a house or something that had faulty wiring in the walls, there would be a very light brown spot on the drywall right where the wires had burned out at and thats where the smell would be the strongest. but I've never heard of an electrical fire smelling like burning wood..until it has burned the house down already that is... it usually smells like burning plastic or rubber since most of the insulation on the wires we use on houses have that type of coating on them.

Have you looked in the attic yet(if you have an attic)? Have you asked your neighbors if they smelled the same smell? perhaps one of them had a bonfire or something.. you never know
