I've always heard it takes a really long time to grow bamboo. Something like several inches a year for many years until they reach a certain height. At that point they start growing exponentially.

this type of "bamboo" is actually a swamp/aquatic plant, if you put it in the soil it will die.
Not a true type of bamboo.
Also bamboo doesn't grow slowly it grows extremely fast.
i have 40-50 new shoots on my property that have grown over 10 feet since the spring...
last year i had shoots over 25 feet tall in one year.
They like my nutrient regimen.
if you have an aquarium with good light exposed to it you can put the plant in there and it'll grow.
Honestly if you want a real bamboo go buy one or get a shovel and machete and go see if there is any around...

here where I am it grows fast, and it is hard to keep it from just taking over lol, what my grand-dad used to do is, take a saw and cut some down, take a piece about a foot long and dig a small ditch, just enough to where the dirt will cover the piece you cut, lay it down and cover it up, it will make shoots and start to spread...

if you do not wish for it to spread in a big area, prepair a spot by digging a footing for concreat, few inches wide an about a foot an half deep, this should keep it where you want it for some time, we made a boarder this way around our yard.

im assuming tho if you live in a place where it gets freezing in the winter then it dies.
and what nutrients do they like?
