7X2 by? How tall? How many do you plan on growing? Will you have adequate ventilation. A 400W is good for 4 or 5 Sq ft max. If you can vent it good and want to fill it right up 2 400's would be nice. That way each one would shine down on a 2 X 3.5 ft area.

Its 8ft tall. Id like to grow as many as i can. and yes I have adequate ventilation going straight outside. I know its narrow but its what i got to work with currently. At the moment i have my seedlings and clones from a friend under 1 65 watt 4200 lummens CFL and Two 42 watt 2700 lummens in a diffrent area. but id like a bigger area for them

I have a 2X4 X 5 ft high tent with 3 good size plants in it. They are filling the tent right up. One 400W HPS Is barely enough. I have to switch their position once a week so that they all get their turn in the "sweet spot" of the light "footprint". That should give you some idea....

yeh get the 400. the 600 might be overkill considering your area is only 2 ft wide. 400 is perfect for 2ft wide. If you want to use the whole 7ft you will need 2 400's. but you can start with one while the plants are small, and if everything is going well you can always add another 400. You can also consider a combination of the 400w HPS with some additional CFL lighting. Let your setup grow with your grow so to speak. ;)

another option would be a 600 on a light mover but i think the 2-400's would be good also, and also make sure to get the right hood for the light, a rectangle shape hood will give off a rectangle footprint so being the space is long and narrow the hood will be a crucial part of the equation since you dont want to be throwing a lot of light right at the walls
