Anybody know the chemical breakdown of OJ and mushrooms, and why OJ supposedly makes you trip harder? or have any links to such chemically informed websites, etc.

I think its placebo effect... apparently it is supposed to have something to do with vitamin C.

Because of the vit C. Out of personal experience I can say that it raises potency of all shrooms except for Amanita Muscaria. Amanita's effects are lowered because of the sour taste of OJ/vit C.
It is because it is an antioxidant. Oxidisation breaks down 4-ho-dmt and Vitamin C helps protect that, thus allowing more of the chemical to get absorbed before it breaks down in digestion.

I had no idea that vitamen c actually increased the effects of shrooming..I always took c or drank oj before or after shrooming for health reasons very interesting tho.

Actually, its none of the above.

The citric acid (vitamin C) breaks the psilocybin into psilocin. The psilocin is what actually makes you trip. When you dont use vitamin C your liver has to do the job.

All the psilocybin being broke into psilocin means that it will hit you quicker and more at once.

I thought the body did that, not vitamin c.
I would like to know where you heard that Vitamin C breaks O-phosphoryl-4-ho-dmt into 4-ho-dmt? Could you please source your reference, including where in the link the info is located so I dont have to dig for it.

I still think that it is because it is an antioxidant.(1)

In humans, vitamin C is a highly effective antioxidant, acting to lessen oxidative stress; a substrate for ascorbate peroxidase[4]; and an enzyme cofactor for the biosynthesis of many important biochemicals. Vitamin C acts as an electron donor for eight different enzymes:[9]

Abstract
"Purified intestinal alkaline phosphatase has been shown to dephosphorylate Psilocybin to form Psilocin and inorganic phosphate. The present report extends these observations to various mammalian tissue homogenates. The rat and mouse kidney and the intestinal mucosa of rabbits and guinea pigs were active in dephosphorylating Psilocybin."During these studies, it was also observed that with certain tissues the dephosphorylation product, psilocin, underwent oxidation to a blue colored product, similar to that seen with Mytilus edulis gills. Heart and kidney homogenates of all species investigated were highly effective in oxidizing Psilocin. This process was inhibited by KCN but not by MAO inhibitors. Its ph optimum was 8.8. Further studies with a rabbit heart mitochondrial preparation and purified pig heart cytochrome oxidase indicate the latter enzyme to be the active system in the oxidation of Psilocin. These processes may play an important role in the central nervous system actions of these agents."

Well i could be wrong, but that exact explanation is what I have been told many times over. Im sorry if my info was wrong.

I actually thought you where way off and that the body breaking it down was a myth. Till I looked it up and realized I was wrong and it did metabolize it to psilocin.
But that lead me to believe that my theory was closer and decide to post what I read so others may be able to confirm or show me my flaw in thought.

Well i think its somewhere in between both our posts really. Your antioxidant does make sense, and I think that vitamin C may affect it in a few different ways.

Thanks guys. I'm not really a savant on bio-chem, so a lot of that was just words to me, but i get the idea a lil better. Before i was thinking it was just something all mental that druggies claimed as true.

All that I really know about psilocin, is that chemically, it is almost exactly the same as serotonin. If you dont know what serotonin is, google it.

Such excellent information. This is what makes a lot of the tryptamines so magical. I'd give you rep points on this but it says that I had already gave you sum. Great post man.

Dont even worry about it man. 90% of my info comes from here or erowid.org

Erowid is the absolute best site for information about any drug. It has EVERYTHING you need to know. What trips are like, how long they last etc.
