Yeah, there are taller versions of the tower fan that I have. I thought about picking one up for the flower tent. Decided to buy a bunch of small guys to just sit on the floor underneath everyone. I might regret it later, perhaps if I decide to grow taller plants, dunno yet. So far so good. Thinking about throwing the draft inducer motor I have into the closet. Need to clean that thing and get some flexible 3" duct. Might help with night time temps, too, especially when it's warm and the AC is on a higher setting.

How tall can you expect to grow hybrids? Do you think you would ever see plants grown indoors, 6 ft from the soil?

Not sure I understand.

I would think plant height is somewhat limited indoors since most our ceilings are 8'. After you put into account the dirt/hydro system and the distance between the ceiling and your light source, 6' plants sounds somewhat possible. Tall plants need a lot of attention to the under canopy, though. Maybe take hints from captain's thread on growing with Cree bulbs.

Me personally, though, I have no idea how big my plants could get. My tent is only 5' tall, I think, so I definitely won't be growing anything too huge. Plus my veg space is limited so I'd probably have to sacrifice some 12/12 time to veg a bigger plant out which I'm not sure is worth it at this point.

For those interested in the verdict, my final thoughts on the RP flood light that I made. Guod was right, RP overload. I increased the RP lens size considerably and there was still too much heat generated at the RP layer. Discoloration of the phosphor after a single harvest, probably more Blue being emitted than expected (although it still looked "White," and "Warm White" at that) and I'm guessing efficiency took a large toll due to the phosphor heat damage. My take on RP technology is you need to spread the Blue light out a lot more than a single multichip will allow unless we're talking relatively low wattage. I'd say this tech isn't readily suited for growing even at the DIY level, there's much cheaper and easier sources of light to be had.

For full closure can you tell what size RP it was and do you know the temperature it had when running?

Yeah, no problem. Running about 100W of Royal Blue about 27mm away from an Intematix ChromaLit series CL-927-P215-PC. The lens came in a 305mm x 215mm rectangular format which I cut down to ~220mm x 180mm so that it would fit the flood light I was using (picture here, it was a modified 30W flood light with CPU cooler attached). Here's a shot of the heat damage, although it's much easier to see in person.



As for temps at the phosphor layer during usage I was never able to test, but due to the circular pattern (roughly 55mm in diameter) left by the increased temps I can say the light wasn't spread evenly over the lens nearly well enough. I'm guessing an RP lens this size could actually handle ~100W of today's Royal Blue LEDs without any real form of cooling, it just can't be emanating from a 20mm x 20mm multichip. Perhaps four 25W multichips would have suited the lens better.

Good grief! I just spent the better part of 10 days working my way through a set of designs that will see me create a 275 x 305 panel made up of strips of 2700/5000 RP from Intematix (fingers crossed....I think they might be sending them to me on a "sample" basis!!!!). Now I stumble across this treasure trove of information and I die a little inside.....before of course growing a lot again :)

I have put a lot of thought into the intensity (LEDs per cm2) vs distance between RP and LED and have bought an experimental unit from a supplier in the UK - and between my research and their unit (and shared experiences) I think strips are the better option to full on powerful matrix LEDs. There is also the option of using 60mm diameter OSLON 12 LED PCBs, but this I think produces a spotlight effect. The experience of the UK supplier was that a distance of 40 - 60mm is best.

Also many thanks for the work on the tomatoes .....I am not an MJ grower, but someone interested in indoor (cellar based) vegetable growing.....but the things I learn here from you people are amazing. My journey is just starting and I really hope to be able to pay it forward. :)

Just took receipt of a "sample" bag of Chromalit panels supplied by the surprisingly generous (i.e. they were FOC) Intematix!!!! Now all I need to do is make up my Royal Blue panel.....straight after my 3070 build.....straight after I find a new job (god damn surprise unemployment!).

Any other people using this stuff?
