i'm still an uber n00b at weed growing, but i've been growing "normal" plants for quite some time now. i'm not sure, but don't weed plants like more of an acidic soil? i've heard that lower ph can influence there to be more females than males, but that in order for them to be happy & healthy, they need slightly more acid than neutral... am i correct?
Yes on the acidic soil, but who knows about the females from more acid. Seems like a simple thing to test. Surely people have tested it for regular plants. Can environment influence sex? Simple enough.

oops... i made a typo... i meant that i heard higher ph made more females. not the other way around. but still, anybody have any insight into this myth, no matter how it goes? if not, i think an experiment is in order... whether anybody claims this to be true or not, i usually have to see to believe, so i'll probably do the experiment anyways.

another question... how do you test soil ph? is there any way to tell without a ph test kit? if not, how do you use one? i have 4 mexican dirt plants that are in some miracle grow seed starting mix, and 3 are female, still waitin on the fourth one to see what it decides to be.

and why do plants seem to die shortly after sprouting for no apparent reason? those 4 mexican dirt plants are all that's left of 20 seeds, all of which sprouted. and i have one purple kush that survived from 3 seeds, all of which sprouted. what's happening? i'm really confused. i started all of my seeds in paper towels inside a sour cream tub with the lid on, and after they sprout i plant them in the cell packs. then i wait until they're tall enough that they are falling over and i plant them into 4-inch pots really deep so part of the stem is under the soil and stake them. they are under a halogen bulb that is kept about 2 1/2 feet away from them and i water them almost every day. i only water if the soil is drying out, though, but i do check them every morning and before i go to bed, so they never dry out. they grow fast after planting in cell packs, and about 1-2 weeks after they were planted in the cell packs, over half of them suddenly die and the rest are fine.

and one more question... does anybody know how to grow shrooms? im buying an eighth of cubensis and i wanna try to grow the spores. is there a thread for shroomers?

Well several red lights dude.

!st halogen has no place in the growing world. They are one of the shittiest of lights that can be used for growing. Go to wallys and buy some CFL or compact florescent lights. Look for the 42 watters, higher the wattage the better..

2nd your plants should definatly not be falling over. Abandon ship. Move them outside, especaiall any good genetics before they get completly wasted because you will have the same outcome. Just intell you get some of those cfls.

3rd you need to make your own thread.

well, i did put my plants outside. then the next day they were gone. i'm not sure, but i think my dumbass neighbor stole them, even though he already knew he was getting some of the crop when i harvested them because he gave me the seeds. most of them were males anyways.

but still, anybody heard anything about that myth that ph affects the male:female ratio?

wow. my neighbor really is a dumbass. it took me only about 15 min to find them. he planted them in the ground in the woods behind my house, so i dug them up and brought them back into my house because that spot he planted them in had shitty light and most of them were dead/dying. they were doing a lot better under my supposedly shitty halogen bulb. i started with more than 20 plants and now there's only about a dozen with a few looking like they're gonna kick the bucket here pretty soon.

Hey I found this on weedfarmer.com. Maybe it is true:

"Your prime concern, after choosing high quality seeds, is the soil. Use the best soil you can get. Scrimping on the soil doesn't pay off in the long run. If you use unsterilized soil you will almost certainly find parasites in it, probably after it is too late to transplant your . You can find excellent soil for sale at your local plant shop or nursery, K-Mart, Wal Mart, and even some grocery stores. The soil you use should have these properties for the best possible results:
  1. It should drain well. That is, it should have some sand in it and also some sponge rock or pearlite.
  2. The pH should be between 6.5 and 7.5 since does not do well in acidic soil. High acidity in soil encourages the plant to be predominantly male, an undesirable trait.
  3. The soil should also contain humus for retaining moisture and nutrients."
