idk man, it's tough to get the real skinny on the blurple lights. so many newbs growing weed for the first time with them, so they don't even know that even their best show is still sub-par. they will argue with you to convince you the mars panels are good and say, "see look at my buds." but we all know that you can't 'see' density and that perspective is difficult to interpret sometimes.
Hey Blurple Light's Matter Too!!!!!!!!!

420 does seem to have a bunch cheerleaders, no question. I'd love to see a side by side where a more expensive unit gives a proportionally higher yield. Double the price should give at least double the yield? Seems fair.
My first impression on switching was the big change in quality. Way larger, harder, more potent and fragrant nugs. The yield was way higher as well but it wasnt an apples to apples comparison.
900 w of best quality led mfg or diy would outperform mars900 probably by 2×. It would be about 2× the par and 1/2 the heat.

Nobody said it won't work, just that there are shit parts in it and that it perform as well as a hid
I read a bit about efficiency and can certainly appreciate. Reminds me of AMD vs. NVidia threads at AT and other sites. Those guys get down, yearly power bill differences and stuff. On that I've usually seen a nominal yearly cost difference. So it's closer to HID in terms of efficiency thanks for the info. Well they seem safe, I know cooling and some stuff, nicely put together

I do not have any bud porn. anyway here is some PPF porn at 18 inches height
Left Vero 29 80 watt COB and right Generic Epistar 80-90 watt UFO. They both have same power. 80-90 watts
PAR/PPF measured with apogee
UFO vs vero 29 same power.png

As you can see at same power input, the Vero 29 puts more than twice the output compared to those 3W Epistar LED's. Now you can say Epistar car give more light with lens or reflector but so can the COB as shown in this post.
If you are under driving Cree cobs. They are even more efficient than vero.
Now i know you mentioned about 5W led.... they are as impotent as 3W led's. Last time i saw 5 watt led was just two pieces of 3watt in single LED. I have attached their impotent photos for reference.

Edit: UFO graph has error. Replace 90 with 100 and 100 with 90 in inner box

This is good but I am still waiting to see cobs clobber a AT600 at = wattage

@ robincnn, I'm going to come to understand and appreciate your post I'm sure, thanks. From naked eye I see a single piece in each lens or whatever. LED tech is pretty impressive to say the least.

Perhaps as I progress I'll invest in a more expensive LED that produces more per watt. For now things work.. I'm approaching harvest and have some very potent stuff. I love firsts, first time I've had buds of my own, I had to sample some! Best methods aside, I snipped a couple, dried them and wow already better than the commercial shit I've been smoking. That is progress plain and simple.

I do think you guys should ease up on Mars though. I mean what other company has delivered a similarly priced product that delivers safe build quality, which produces results? Think about noobs getting into this. Think 10 bucks more in a monthly power bill, or a couple ounces less makes a difference? Any yield is an achievement, hell I just looked at trichomes for the first time. I think safety comes first, results second, efficiently third. Cost, well hell that's where it gets complicated and I start thinking about something else. ;)

my mars almost caught on fire

my diy is totally safe.

its like 50% of the utility bill and its double the production and much higher quality.

It is an exciting achievement to have a successful first harvest. Congrsts.

mars grows flowers its true. it is acceptable for a starter light. imo

I think Mars lights serve a purpose for beginners. COBs are intense and require that you have your nutrients down, or you can quickly f--k your plants up with them. Mars lights provide "soft" light, plants respond slowly and don't get anywhere near their potential -- but they do tend to finish. You can probably grow under a Mars light with just FFOF soil out of the bag and water, and you'll get something to smoke and see how you like the process of growing. At this point lots of us have an old Mars light up on a shelf that we're not using, so hopefully the newbies can save some money and borrow one for that first experimental grow.

If you are serious enough to be looking at Mars more expensive models, then IMO its time to do some research and move on to better lights. But the original old style 100x3 is like training wheels for newbies, I think its an acceptable place to start.

What's the deal with these "weedbulbs.com" colored cfls I see advertised hereally a lot. Anyone know what the colorings are really achieving? Is it just red/blue/purple dyed glass?
