Marijuana in Space – NASA Discovers THC on Meteorite Fragment

A team of astrophysicists at the University of Hawaii have created somewhat of a stir within the scientific community after the discovery of trace amounts of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) on a meteorite found in the Nevada desert in 2010.


The team of researchers who analyzed hundreds of meteorite fragments in search of microbacterial data found the presence of Tetrahydrocannabinol in trace amounts, the principal psychoactive constituent of cannabinoids, a class of diverse chemical compounds that are found in a variety of plants, but most famously in the cannabis plant.

The study, that is funded in part by a NASA grant for research in astrobiology, is the first documented find of a psychoactive organic compound originating from outside of the Earth’s atmosphere, a discovery that could revolutionize our modern view of psychotropic agents and their “cosmic” origins, admits astrophysicist James Han, head of the research team.

The discovery was clearly unexpected, admits the astrophysicist specialized in astrobiology.

“These findings will have a profound impact on the science of astrobiology as a whole” admits the scientist, visibly perplexed by the discovery.

“If psychoactive elements are found outside of this planet’s atmosphere, what does it say about the rest of the universe? If these chemical substances, that change brain functions and result in alterations in perception, mood, or consciousness in mammals as well as humans, find their origin in outer space, what role then has cometary impacts played on the human species? Or on life on the planet as whole? This discovery ultimately leaves us with more questions than answers”acknowledges the professor.

“It also gives a whole new meaning to the term getting high” he told local reporters, with a pinch of humor.

Traces amounts of Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) were also found in a meteorite fragment in 2009 by a research team from the University of Mexico but the findings were dismissed at the time because of the “controversial nature of the discovery” and a wave of skepticism from the scientific community. Further analysis of the sample could now shed some light on this latest finding, believe experts.

Ethanol is 2 carbon atoms, 6 hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. THC is 21 carbon atoms, 30 hydrogen atoms, and 2 oxygen atoms, arranged in a much more complex molecular structure.

Because there is so little heat in space, it is extremely rare for complex molecules to form - there's not enough available energy to sustain most chemical reactions. Most of the matter in space is in elemental form, or very simple molecules like water. Even the presence of large amounts of alcohol was baffling to scientists at first, and there are various theories involving concepts I can't really even pretend to understand like quantum tunneling to explain how it might form at such extremely low temperatures. Bigger molecules are exponentially less likely to be able to form naturally in space. Finding alcohol in space was quite a surprise. Finding something as complex as THC would be absolutely mind-blowing.

I understand its not your field, but if you had any guess as to why the thc is in space what would it be?

For sure man, I know nothing about this stuff so I dont truly acknowledge how serious this could be. I just wonder, if it is true...how did it happen? Very cool.

space stuff isnt my field either, ive studied quantum coolness and drug design...but terpene formation has been called more complex than any aspect of the "sciences". and i understand relatively how they are created atleast in cannabis.
the fact that we "found" a prominent psychotropic one thats been given much attention in recent years and not say a precursor or a bland pinene...
leads one to say adulterated specimen. there are many things wrong with the article, and thc woudnt be found alone.

Geranyl pyrophosphate and a precursor to olivetolic acid react, a c12 (for pentyl) c10(for propyl)polyketide,then through cyclization yielding olivetolic acid..

then catalyzed by an enzyme to produce cannabigerolic acid along with alkylation necessary .. The production of Thc (and propyl)thcv cbd cbdv and cbc cbcv are controlled by 3 different enzymes Thca synthase being the enzyme converting cbga to thca through an oxidative cyclization of the geranyl group on cbga(of course this is all a bit, well really simplified for y'all) geranyl diphosphate + olivetolate =cannabigerolate + diphosphate.. cannabigerolate + O(2) = Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinolate + H(2)O(2)

each one of these would be a miracle in space

I understand its not your field, but if you had any guess as to why the thc is in space what would it be?
I think somebody was smoking pot who found it but honestly I don't believe it. The compound is to complex. Or it broke off a planet full of weed..


But marijuana is different then any plant on earth so who knows..

According to the article: They analyzed hundreds of meteorite samples from a 2010 find and THC was on all of them. Additionally a Mexican university had found THC on meteorite samples in 2009 (from a different site I believe.) The Mexicans suppressed their own findings because they didn't want to sound like stoners like NASA does now. But yeah, I'm guess contamination in both cases.
