Males Are Good

If possible, i've heard it's good to keep the males, obviously in a seperate environment. As the males will still produce resin on the leaves, so long as the area is humid enough. Gotta be worth keeping if you can find a space for them somewhere. Especially good if you have a strain that is known as a resinous plant.

I try to keep 1 until i can cut off a branch, put it in a bag to shack it on a fem branch just as, or a little after she start to bud, do it this way, if your lucky you only get seed on the 1 branch, other than doing this, id ditch it, he can flower a fem for miles lol.

DO NOT KEEP THE MALES..

1. NOT WORTH THEIR WEIGHT IN PISS
2. NOT WORTH GETTING BUSTED FOR PISS
3. they don't produce anything but piss and pollen.. pollen will fuck your ENTIRE HARVEST...

it is not worth the risk...

Bit harsh Knowm; it looks as though you have a deep-seated hatred of the male plant. Obviously they need to be kept in a seperate environment, and I'm only a beginner; I just read an article glorifying the resin value of the male plant. I've smoked sputnik before, once, about ten years ago, and I can't wait to have some again. It was off a friend, and he'd brought a couple of ounces back with him from India, up his... anyway the smoke was amazing, real smooth, just like the high.

O.K. Knowm, say you have a resinous plant, a very resinous, male plant. What would be the yield in hash from one plant? And if you had twenty would it be worth setting up a seperate environment for them?

The hash would be marketed as sputnik or indian cream and sell at roof-top prices. Say, 120 an ounce, Sterling. I have to write 'sterling' as my keyboard refuses to recognise the pound symbol. Recognises the $ though. About $175. I think... I'm not up on exchange rates.

While we're on the subject, how much resin off a female plant, say a resinous strain? I suppose I'll find out for myself soon, it'd just be nice to have some sort of expectation before-hand.

Hi Skunk.

sorry if I came across harsh.. : (

it was just supposed to be adamant.. : )

i don't know.... yikes.. i said it.. I don't know..

but, i have never seen a "resinous" male plant...

I have seen new growers.. keep a male.. just cause they couldn't BARE to kill it... it was their first grow and they kept the SOB alive cause it was so healthy and strong.. and after all, IT WAS MARIJUANA/CANNABIS...

The male eventually pollinated the entire crop and turned a gold mine into a copper mine..

That GROWER never did that again.. (cough, cough) :wall:

lol, hes right though. Males are evil. They have ruined one of my crops once. Very dissapointing.

If it was me I would have 20 dead males.

There is absoloutely no way I'd keep the males around females; it's just that i have this friend who has all this un-used space in his loft - nowhere near where my set-up is.

I actually have a few resin plants, JTR, resin mix. Even the males are supposed to be oozing with the stuff. It seems a shame to throw them away when I can flower them somewhere else, well away from my females of course. I mean, we're talking a good few miles away!

THERE IS NO WAY I'D KEEP THE MALES ANYWHERE NEAR THE FEMALES!!

I promised my mate I'd go twos on the hash with him.

I believe the plants will start producing their sexual organs around the third or fourth week of veg'. Check the gallery to see pics of my little beauties 3 weeks in. They're not producing sex organs yet but we're expecting them to start any day now.

It's my 1st grow too so i'm a little unsure about giving advice. The only thing I recommend you do is to use the internet to download pictures of the male and female adolescent sex organs and try and find differences between the two.

Or you could take clones of your plants while they are still in veg' and force them to flower in a different environment. Keep careful note of which clone each plant belongs to and then you'll easily be able to determine the sex of said plants. This method seems a little complicated and i'm not going to attempt it myself, i'm going to wait until I have a bit more experience. You can read all the literature in the world, be told over and over again the same thing, but you never really know till you get stuck in. Doing it for yourself is the only way to really learn.

well myself, I have kept a male, but he is away from the girls, and I am only going to use him for breeding (the others got mixed up in the oil pot).

I am making a cross between BC god bud (God Bud x Hawaiian x Purple Indica) with willie nelson (Vietnamese & Nepalese). And I only put pollen on a few of the buds on the lower part of the female plant with a small paint brush so I don't seed all my buds.

Next year I plan to cross those seeds (willie and god) with White Widow (from Turkey) and BC Monkey Pal (Durban Poison crossed back into a vintage Afghani #1 IBL) to see what I can get.

I've pulled out what should be my last male today. But I've phoned my friend and told him to keep the next one, if there is one. There are 2 that aren't showing yet because of late transplanting. we started with 40 and now have 20, so realistically the final 2 should be female. But if they're not then i'm going to keep a male for breeding purposes. We'll be starting from seed next time anyway. Different strains, but it'd be good to keep this strain going as well.
