Making Monster Mama Clones

Monster Mamas are what I call plants that have been created from a plant in flower. This forces the plants to re-veg (revert to the vegetative stage). It can be done with clones, or by re-regging a whole plant that is already in flower. I've laid out the steps for the clone route with pics below. It definitely takes some time (about 4 -5 months),, but the resulting plant is extremely bushy, stays short, and shoots off dozens++ of branches for clones every few weeks. A perfect Monster Mama!!!

When I find a strain that I want to keep and use as a mother, here's how I create my Monster Mamas:

1) I take a cutting in 3rd or 4th week of flowering near the base of the plant. You want to make sure the plant has fully transitioned to the flowering stage. I judge it by having a new flower that looks like the Cotton Candy clone below.

2) Trim it up, remove all but the top few leaves, and put it in your cloner. (I leave the flower on.) I use an oxy-cloner - you can use any cloning method that works for you. The monster clone will take at least to 2 times longer to form roots than regular clones so be patient. At this stage the plant is both re-vegging (reverting back to it's vegetative stage and making roots, so she's got a lot going on. Here's a Cotton Candy cutting in my cloner.

3) Once roots are established, transplant into your favorite growing medium and put under your veg lights. After a few weeks (sometimes earlier) you'll start to see single leaflets emerging as new growth that look like this:

4) In 2 months it will look like this:

Happy Growing. I hope this is helpful to folks

I prefer not to let mother plants or clones ever hit 12/12, I've noticed some strains lose vigor or loss of flavor/resin intensity. I've only revegged one or two flowered plants, one did fine with no lost of vigor/resin etc but the other was stuck in shock so it vegged really slow but buds still turned out great.

Some plants do fine and some not so much, but it's a great way to save a plant you didn't clone or seed though. Cheers.

Hey notso,
You make a really interesting point about loss of vigor. It's totally fucking with with the plants' natural growth cycle which has to be very stressful. I haven't noticed any diminished vigor or resin production but will definitely keep it in mind. Curious as to what strain were you working with? I've got monsters of Fruit Punch, Burmese Kush, and Berry Bomb that have produced many a successful grow.

cheers

The one that didn't like it was an indica dom Swiss Miss from Nirvana seeds many years ago but I also nearly killed it once from not watering it so that might have killed the vigor of clones too.

The grape god from Next generations was the one that I ran for about three years and towards the end it just wasn't holding up to the new strains I was running. But when I first flowered her she was very potent and would put you to sleep midday.

Skunk#1 from dutch passion was one of the plants that myself and a few buddies actually revegged several times with no apparent loss of vigor etc.

I think indicas respond harsher to reveg than sativa and sat dom. hybrids. Cheers.

One thing that I forgot to mention in the original post is that the re-vegged Mama plant needs to reach full maturity and be putting of full sets of mature leaves before you take clones. They can get leggy, start shooting off new growth all over but still not be mature. If you take clones before maturity, they will be weak, stretchy and weird. I have one I'm experimenting with now and will post a pic.

I have done the very thing this thread is about. If you live in an area with high humidity and heat you will need to use hydrogen peroxide to keep the fungus down. 2 tablespoons of 3% H2O2 in a spray bottle....spray plant as well as the soil ....also great for keeping those fungus gnats away.

Revegging should only be done in an emergency. The best practice is to keep a mother plant constantly in veg stage and backup important clones to trusted sources. Re veg is not recommended unless you are losing a priceless plant that was. It backed up.

I'm curious and always learning. What are the negatives that you know of? I haven't experienced the lack of vigor mentioned earlier, or a lack in potency but I've only been through about 4 full grows with clones from my Burmese Kush, 3 with my Berry Bomb.

Revegging sucks. It takes for ever.. I just went thru that with 2 plants I didn't allow then to fully reveg. I was just waiting until I had somewhere to put them. Now they are flowering again
