Making coconut oil - unknown thc content

I am planning on making some coconut oil with a recent harvest.

1. What is a good baseline to start out with if you don't know the estimated thc content in the flower? Weight of flower vs quantity of coconut oil

2. If you use the trim and larf, how much more of that do you use in place of using straight flower?

It depends on your end usage scenario to me...plus I like strong edibles although I have found out there is such a thing as too strong too...
Eg: making a dozen brownies I won't use as much in a cup of oil because it's only 12 portions
Making 200 gummies with a cup of oil. I'll use a good bit more. For God's sake though use lecithin and yes stir it for a solid 10 minutes (I've made lotsa mistakes)

Using trim I usually end up high and being like it's not going to be that strong and through a shitton in. Many times I've been very wrong and ended up in a Buddha state for a whole day. When it's sugar leaf trim and larf now I usually double.

Initially, I am going to be making gummies. That said, I will ultimately be making oil to keep on hand for future use. If it is a but strong, it's my understanding that I can cut the cannaoil with plain coconut oil in order to tone it down a bit.

When it comes to the gummies, im a fan of low dose 5mg gummies. I just take one before bed and sleep well. That said, I have very low tolerance and I assume it will be going up in the future.

Don't forget to emulsify the fuck out of it. Otherwise you end up with oil seeping out of them.
I'd say your first recommendation of a quarter is good. If you don't have a machine or something for it...instant pot and a mason jar works brilliantly with less mess and easy cleanup. (For decarb and everything)I'm lazy so I use a French press to strain it after.
Edit: oh and a meat injector works great for the molds better than a dropper tube thing.

Yeah. I have sunflower lecithin and guar gum.

As far as the Decarb, I'm going to try the sous vide method in order to keep smell down.

Most top strains today are 20% thc minimum. Do the math 2x. Use 15% and 20% to find an average of what they will be. So for each gram of flowers you use, that's 150mg and 200mg x the total amount of grams you use. Next, devide the amount of total oil you use by how many ml. Example, 2 cups is 480ml on my measureing cup. If you used 10 grams flower, that would be 1,500 mg and 2,000 mg range. Devide the 1500 by 480 and than the 2000 by 480. You're per ml of oil would be between 3.125 and 4.16 mg. If you want the doses higher, you add more MJ or just use less oil. It works the same either way.

Well, I pulled the trim and popcorn out of the freezer. I decarbed ~25g in the sous vide at 194°F for 2 hours. I then split it in half and put it in 2 jars. 1 cup of coconut oil in each jar and put them in the sous vide for 4 hours at 185°. Set an alarm and got up in the middle of the night to strain it out and jar it up. I ended up with just a touch under 2 cups of oil after straining. We will see how it works in a batch of gummies in the next day or two.

25g of popcorn and trim and 2C of unrefined coconut oil ended up being pretty weak. That said, I made gummies and they turned out great. I am a fan of low dose 5mg gummies from the dispo for night time relax and unwind for bedtime. The molds I used are 1.7mL dinosaur molds. I eat one an hour or so before bedtime and I can very mildly feel it start to come on and then proceed to sleep very well without ever getting the stoned feeling. So, while the oil is weak, I guess it gave me the exact result I was looking for. Next batch, I will probably make with straight flower and I assume that it will be stronger?

Good job. Good bud will make it stronger. You like the low dose tho so I'd stick to your quarter per cup plan. I like strong so I go 28 grams per cup haha.

Take it to be tested this way you will have good numbers for accurate dosing. I found a local source nearby my home that charges $25 per test. If you live in a state where it's legal, ask someone at a dispensary if they can make a referral. That's how I got my source :).

Not an option for me. I'll just keep doing the trial and error method.

It's really not that serious to nees testing. You keep note and make adjustments each batch when you find what works. The most standard ratio is 1 oz of buds to 1 lb(4 sticks/2cups) of butter/oil/Alcohol. Go off of that to make it stronger or weaker. I'd make 3 batches. Use 3/4 oz/2 cups, 1 oz/2 cuos and 1 1/4 oz/2 cups and see what you like. Obviously you can scale them all down. Maybe to 1/8 of buds to equivalent amounts of oil.
