Live and Let Die - LED & Coco

What's up RIU? Back with a new journal after taking a few months off. I've been hooked on King Klone brand clones lately. Last round was some amazing Candyland and Blackjack; this time around it is Medusa and Phantom. Phantom is Cherry Pie x GDP and Medusa is something very similar to that. I wrote it down somewhere but can't find it. Cherry Pie crossed with one of their other cuts, I want to say Candyland.

4 clones total, 2 of each, in Canna Coco and feeding them Canna nutrients. Canna has been a long time staple in my gardens. Always top notch in terms of quality.

My grow space is about 3x2'x5' (LxWxH). For the first week, they were in party cups and under an Area 51 SGS-160 in veg mode. Today they got transplanted to 3 gallon fabric pots. I also hung up the DIY COB I built with the help and guidance of a couple super helpful RIU members. A huge thank you to them for answering all my questions and helping me choose parts.

The DIY COB is a Luminus XNOVA CXM-27 (3000K / 80 CRI) on a Nuventix 70w spotlight heatsink being cooled by a SynJet ZFlow90 fan, and being powered with a Meanwell LPC-60-1400 driver for the COB and a RECON power supply for the fan. I can try to dig up links for everything if people are interested. Pretty much got everything off Digi-key. I have enough parts to do one more. I hope to have it done by the time they are ready for flower, maybe in 2 weeks. At that point I'll also be hooking up the Apache Tech AT200.

Here are some pics. Comments and suggestions are always appreciated. Peace.

Awesome!!

It's looking super bright in there!

Am I correct to assume there is a fan on the top side of your COB fixture there?

There it is :hump:! I've been waiting to see that monster you created. Very nice 8). I just picked up some CXM-22s for the Veg cab and I'm sad I bought the Artic11 Pluses instead of grabbing a SynJet/Nuvetnix now :(. Hows the heat at 1400mA? Is it loud? How long have you been using your XNovas? And aren't you amazed how the XNovas are made with the littlest tinniest LEDs ? Much smaller than what B-Lux uses for their Veros.

I'm betting you're going to grow some outrageous dankness with all those lights this round :eyesmoke:. You're such a gear head dude LOL.

Peace and Best of Luck Puff. And +1 for XNova: The Other, Other CoB. LOL.

The other, other COB, hahaha. The heat isnt too bad, slightly warm to the touch and can feel it radiate an inch or so off the heatsink if you hold your hand beneath the light. Might be better with a bigger heatsink or by wiring the synjet to max performance. I just wired it to its normal operating setting, there was also one for silent mode but normal isnt even audible. Only been using it for 24 hours so not sure what to expect, but yeah these tiny things are super bright.

What temp did you get on the 22s for your veg cab? How many mA will you run them at?

!!!! I have been waiting too. I love to watch you work with great genetics. And some new lighting in the mix...sounds like greatness in the making.
Medusa and phantom both have outrageous pedigrees.
Thanks man. Im stoked for this: new toys, dank strains; should be a killer run. I noticed you were wanting to give straight coco a try. What brand coir were you thinking? At $20 a bag, Canna can get pretty expensive quick especially for those big ass pots you use.

I was literally just looking stuff up. I usually use black gold for my mixes, the price is good. But was looking if there were better options. Canna is great from everyone that uses it. Your right that my pots make price a factor. I'm going to go with (20) 5gals. But if I cheap out...I really have to rinse all that.

That's what is great about canna, no need to rinse it and it's always very clean. Only other brand ive tried is botanicare cocogro, didnt like it as much as canna and it was the only time ive had gnats. Ive heard good things about the roots organics and black gold though. Then there's the brick options but i havent really explored thar route..

I went with the 4000K 80 CRI 22s. It can be difficult locating Cool White XNovas. I think that's a Luminus Devices marketing/sales thing, keep the Cools in the East and the Warms in the West. Got lucky when some search engine found some Neutrals on DigiKey, (which there own search engine/inventory program never listed! Grrrr, effin DigiKey :cuss:), and I remembered I had a flowering panel with Neutrals that would produce the most leafy buds so I said what the hey we'll give Neutrals another shot but in the Veg cab. Also I've kept away from Neutrals because of a floriculture study I read, (that of course I can't locate now :dunce:), that studied the effect of green light, and green LEDs, on flowering plants. They said that any light they studied that contained anything over 25% green retarded flowering but the important part was that different plants liked different levels of green, so I figured I'd avoid green till people got their MMJ info together. I tend to agree with this paper because of what I saw in my flowering room with the Neutral whites I used, but in the Veg room leafy plants are a plus, right? And the blue peak is the same as the XNova's Cool whites, so that and the 120 to 130 l/w performance made me pull the plug. I did make a slight mistake reading some data and thought they had a bigger, deeper red peak, but it seems that it doesn't matter because growth is off the hook and I'm thinking of cutting the Illumitex for a few hours a day just to save a little cash.

I'm only running them at 630mA , I want efficiency and I'm trying to run them passively with just the Artic11's heatsink. I've added 14 Illumitex LEDs now but I did run the CXMs for a couple of days all alone and 4 CXM easily replaced 12 XT based CREE bulbs from the growth I saw but in fairness to CREE bulbs Warm whites suck in the Veg cab and I don't recommend running CREE bulbs horizontally with a reflector on. Heat goes up and radiometric performance goes to shit.

Sorry for the long winded answer, I'm a bit bored today.

LOL OK but the rig is in the midst of my veg cab transition. I'm rewiring, adding some XP-E whites to a nursery/clone area, putting in smaller fans, multiple on/off switches and then I'll be installing the XNovas and the Illumitex the right way so it's a bit messy in the veg cab . BTW the wires for the CoBs run inside the rod they are hanging on and the XNovas will be on chains soon so they can be raised and lowered.

Update Time. Day 11 of Veg from Clones.

It's smooth sailing. No complaints or issues. The Medusa is more lanky than the Phantom. Debating if I want to top them or not. Still need to get the other CXM finished (more like started). Probably another 10-14 days. I don't want them to get too big.

There's a little nug of the Candyland. It's amazing. Also got my hands on some Thin Mint GSC wax. That's some knockout shit. Finally stepped into the future and got a vaporizer pen. It's the Atmos Dart. Groupon had a killer deal on it a month or two ago for like $20. It's OK for herb, and no issues with waxes/oils. I dig how small it is. Not bad if you can get a deal on it. Got tired of waiting on that stupid grasshopper pen (PSUAGRO???).

P.S....Does anyone know how to rearrange the pictures after being uploaded? It looks like no matter what order you do them, they end up in alphabetical order. Thanks.

Hey man. Yeah the blackjack was super tasty. I chopped the candy land right about 8 weeks, maybe like 58 days. And I let the blackjack go a couple more days. 9 and a half sounds way too long to me. Got a picture?
