Move it according to growth. Once they get a nice set of two sets of true leaves you should be fine to drop that 400 on top of them...well of course keeping the heat factor in mind. i just did the same thing with the same light. i started out at 5ft. then i moved it around around 1ft a day..and now i have the lights at about 14 inches. I will probably move it down to about 11 or 12 inches tomorrow. Hope this helps

The light was five feet when the seeds where planted. The light remained there until all the seed casing have cracked; expsoing the first set of leaves and just starting to work on there first set of TRUE leaves. From then I start to move the light down. Aprox. 1ft per day. The distance you move the light depends on your plants growth. For example my babies have three heathly nodes and the 400w is 11 inches away...they are eating it up!! They are 9 days from seed. Hope this helps

the roots on one of my plants grew faster and on my other 2 they are yet to break free from the foam stuff... so one plant is twice or 3 times as tall. i want to keep lowering light...except i am afraid to fry the stragglers

30 inches above the one that is about 3 inches. making it about 31 on the smaller two... (day 8 from seed)

on the big one i see 2 sets of true leaves and on the lil' ones only one set...

If they are not stretching then leave the light where it is at. If they are then I would drop to 24inches

Drop it down to 24 inches and keep and eye on em! But you should be fine. just make sure heat issues are in check.

i also had questions about the distance from a 400w hps. so you say after the third healthy node you can have them as close as 18 inches aways. i was paranoid and have had them 3 feet since seedlings.
