You guys don't get the China connection. They back engineer it all. They have gotten to the level that these may be exactly the same. They ignore patents which are the height of Govt pick and choose. I swim in the US patent sea and it is bullshit.

So, there is no mystery to these COBs, or the 10 hp virtual brushless motors that I get for RC cars at 1/2 the price.

They are most likely not CREE. But, they most likely produce practically the same light at the same effeciency. I will make some measures,

I don't think I got real Cree or stolen Cree. I got China Cree. Eyes wide open.

The suckers were $86 bucks at Mouser. I got them for $50.50

Will they even light? I don't know. But, no one has said they won't.

I think that copying these COBs is much more difficult task than you think. Counterfeits would be significantly less efficient with significantly worse color consistency. SupraSPL measured them and they did well. Makes me believe that KB is distributing genuine COBs.

Thing to check is the lot code. Find out from Cree what happened to these.

Yes, you believe and I don't know. You are loading the term counterfeit, as in, low quality. That is not my experience. And if Cree can make it, anyone can copy it, if you have the equivalent to the China National Labs at your disposal. It is ONLY about the phosphor layer as I understand it, Mass Spectrometry reveals the exact doping ratios.

If they were that simple to copy, why would other brands bother producing (much) less efficient leds .. ?!?
It would be great, we would be flooded with amazing and cheap Chinese replica's

You can't just, take a led, analyse it, and counterfeit it ... reproduce the whole production line, machines that easily etc ..

Even if it could be done pretty easily (stretch) .. by the time you have produced the machines and assembly line .. a new better product/bin would be available, and perform better.

This market is moving fast, so it's a bit like a space program, you need your own tech, you can't just copy other people's space shuttles as you go along lol
(Or you do, but you're decades behind)

Oh bull. You know nothing about their capabilities. It is all very modern and very precise.

So until you know, like I do, don't guess. We are in a vast commercial contest with China and it is very SIMPLE to back engineer a COB.

Our main thing at work is security. What makes you think the Chinese govt didn't just break into Cree and steal the entire Intellectual Property about this?

If you make LED COBs already, it is very simple to subject a Cree to destructive testing and chemical and spectral analysis.
