It was mainly country bumkins we sent over the top in the Commonwealth Army's. The rich and educated became offices and just told them to "set, wait for it.." and then blew a whistle for the men to charge the machine guns...

Early on in World War One, it was a popular conception that it would be over quickly and so many of the young scions of wealth and privilege hurried to join up and enjoy a patriotic romp in the countryside.

Obviously it didn't turn out that way.
