Jiffy Pot to Hydro question......

Apparently The "Jiffy Group" has gotten rid of the jiffy pot site (discontinue?) Anyway, have a few sprouts in my green house in jiffy pellets (obviously) Question is, Should i put the jiffy pellet in the Hydroton and risk clogging the system, or should I attempt to pull the root out? If I should leave in, should I remove the mesh around the starter substrate? First time dwc grower.... please be gentle?

Haha. Im using the General Hydro Waterfarm. I didn't have any rock wool, only jiffy pellets (soil). The waterfarm came with theh Hydroton Clay Pebbles or whatever there called. I've only been running my system for a week at 30min intervals (nutrient pump and airstone). No clogs or stopped up drip holes. Although do see the soil sitting in the bottom of my bucket when I changed my nutrient solution the first time. Not sure if the soil can cause any bacteria or not. Might want to watch that.. I have some solution ready for that too. just in case. All in all, my system runs fine using the pellets to transplant. Let me know how yours goes!!

The biggest problem in DWC units is the introduction of organic materials. This helps lead to unwanted and potentially plant lethal algae blooms. No soil products near a DWC unit.

i have done it for years when i pop new strains. never a problem and easier on plants.

there is the possibility of the netting bursting and the soil getting into res, pump, or sprayers.

I had my plants in jiffy pots and I just stuck them in rock wool cubes and then hydro ton in 7inch net pots...its been almost a full grow with no I'll affects

I've also heard that you can't take a plant out of soil and transfer it to hydro/bubbleponics but I did that with my 4 clones that weren't really doing anything and in a week the plants blew up with née growth and they look beautiful right now!!

Skunk: I think that may depend on what type of hydro system you're using. I wouldn't put them into an aeroponics system or you're going to clog your nozzles. I've used them often enough in my DWC's and my DIY Stealth Hydro knock off bubble tubs I built with no problem. The only beef I have with the Jiffy grow plugs, and a couple of others, is that they're dirty; they muddy up the water in an active hydro system. If you encase your pump in a filter bag or a woman's nylon sock you probably won't have a problem, just a dirty reservoir you'll want to clean more often.

You might want to think about that in advance next time. You can start seeds and clones in rock wool and rubber plugs that don't foul up your reservoir when you put them in, but Jiffy's will. But, before you think I'm anti-Jiffy, I'm not. I use them regularly in dirt. They're great there. I hope that helps. HSA
