Is smell from growing really that strong?

Hello,
Im thinking about growing a single plant in 120x80cm growbox. My family knows what Im doing and either they don't mind about growing, but what I'm wondering about is smell.. Im living in apartments, I don't need to hide the smell from my family, so do I need the carbon filter?
Will neighbours be able to smell it? Will the smell be so strong that the whole apartment will smell like weed?
Edit: I will grow Bubblegummer (Serious Bubble Gum)

Yes get a filter. Even tho your family might know to any guest they will be able to tell once they step foot in or get close to the door.

this is true. im only in my 3rd week of going 12/12 from seed and i can smell it when i walk in my apartment. not outside of it yet but definitely as soon as i walk in. definitely research filters and dont go cheap on this item. i dont know what works yet as i havent hooked mine up, yet, but its just common sense. good luck

my first grow, i thought i was growing mk ultra, but i had dropped the seeds on the floor and got them mixed up with super skunk by g13 labs.. it was my first grow, and i hadn't invested in a carbon filter at that time, and for months on end, as soon as you opened the front door to my crib, it smelled like two skunks were having raw butt sex in my place.. it was brutal.. flowering went on through most of summer, and for months i was so damn worried about that funky skunk smell every where.. it was bad, and i mean really, really, really, really, really, really bad.. did i mention it was bad yet? the only good thing was it smelled more like dead, road kill skunk then straight up weed, but if you knew what good weed smells like, you'd know what that funk emitting from my grow was..
i swore after that grow to never grow that strain again, way too much paranoia for me, and to never not grow without a carbon filter again, which i've lived up to both..
obviously, some strains are much worse in the odor dpt, but give your consciuos a break, and get a fliter..

One female plant will stink. You will not think it is so bad because you will be around it and not notice...like a person with bad BO, they never know. Your in an apartment? Unless you have the money and the knowledge to make a air tight room with a filter and proper ventilation, YOU WILL GET BUSTED!.

One plant should not be that bad. Where is your exhaust going? Do you smoke weed in the house? Maybe get a couple air fresheners and/or plug ins to freshen up the room. Some strains are not as stinky as others, and depending on your light and environment, a single plant should not cause that big of a problem.

i disagree, even a single plant can be stunky as all get out, depending on what strain it is obviously.. but i'll give you some of those ss seeds, or any rks, or say an ak47, and grew that shit in the dead of summer with no odor control and get back at me and tell me it don't stink.

Ignore the guy that says one plant won't be that bad. A single plant in flowering can be smelt through the walls and floors/ceiling. If your growing anywhere within 1/8 mile of other people you need need need to have a carbon filter.

I know how bad skunk is, racerboy... I am growing a skunk strain now. However there are strains that are bred to reduce odor. I have experience from my grows that I have observed lighting can be a huge issue, as well. I grew with fluorescents and the smell was not as bad as HPS. The plants still smelled, but not as bad.
If the OP smokes in the room, the room will reek of weed anyhow. Humidity also plays a factor, as the smell will be more pungent in moist air.

flowering cannabis smells much differently then smoked, dried flowers ime.. anyone who has smelled both, ie, a neighbor, should be able to tell the difference between the two imvho..

The filter is definitely worth it, as they help avoid some douche smelling the grow and calling the cops, or telling some idiot that will try to steal your grow.

Even if it's a single plant, I'd fork out the dough for a filter.

Good luck, regardless.

I grew a Northern Lights strain, which was not too stinky at all. If you have a sealed closet, with an exhaust venting out high above normal traffic areas (roof or high window) it would not be a big problem.
... but then again, I do not know the OPs details.

Dude ! be safe my man, it kind of concerns me that you're growing in an apartment. You do know that they have fire extinguisher checks, a/c filter changes, pest control visits, pet checks, etc, right? These are all basically excuses that they can use to enter your apartment and have a looksie hoo ha around.... Not trying to scare you, but be safe. I don't want to read an eviction thread because they found some shit.

Well for this I'd have to say strain dependant. I can smoke some stardawg now after you can walk in the room and think it's fresh bud in a bag.

Anyway, thanks for the info, I will be making active carbon filter.

I've grown in a "stealth" cabinet with 150w HPS and one Dutch Passion's Blueberry and after the fact I found out everybody in my home knew I was growing from the smell. I thought I slick about it with homemade carbon filter.

I grew a Bubblegummer last year but it was not the bubblegum smelling pheno. A very aromatic fruity smell. Don't think I'd grow at all in an apartment. Too much of a nightmare if you need to move the op. But if you do, you'd be wise to invest in good filtration. Good luck!

Wait til you start trimming and drying, it will stink up the whole house. Your parents might not like the odor once it starts flowering but that's nothing compared to trimming and drying. Definitely look into some type of filters, it's worth the peace of mind knowing you can control the odor. GL

I'm suprised this isn't the first thing that is mentioned to anyone growing herb. IT STINKS. IME carbon filters only do so much. I second spending the money on a good filter. Don't waste your time with a small one. Your gonna spend almost at much money and realize a couple weeks into flower you should have just gotten a bigger one.

Racerboy, you hit the nail on the head-when YOUR noticing the smell is getting bad the paranoia isn't far behind and it won't go away until you can get it under control. This paranoia practically took all the fun out of my first grow.

Carbon filter, Ona Gel, Ozone generators(although a lot of people don't like them, they work really well-maybe better then anything else).

I use a combo of all three. The carbon filter in my tents, and a bucket of ona gel in the room outside of my grow room. The ozone generator is only used on an 'as needed' basis when smell really gets outta hand.

Here is how bad it smells,

Many a grower has been caught, not because someone reported that they smelled 'weed', but they report that they think there is a dead body/animal somewhere, or they call animal control because they think skunks must be nesting in their backyard, etc. They smell 'something' that is strong enough to make them call some branch of authority and check out what it is.
