Interrupting night cycle with a lighter?

So I went to check the temps at night and I used a lighter to see the readings.

Would this stress them out at all?

Just curious if fire can disturb a night cycle.

Yes it will mess with the dark cycle. Get one with a remote sensor.

I have to disagree. I use my phone all the time to check the temp and humidity in the tent, without any adverse effects. I think this light leak thing is way too over-thought. Plants in nature have full moons. I don't know what the point of keeping the temp/humidity meter outside the tent. Just my opinion.

Not a problem at all. Even full light for a few minutes won't cause any harm.

You hit the nail right on the head.

I think that the light has to produce enough energy for the plants to absorb and use in order to "wake em up" and cause stress. Such as the light itself turning on mid sleep, or a incadescent room light being turned on for long enough with light leaks that eventualy cause the plant to start trying to absorb the energy but failing since not enough energy is available for plant to utilize and then causing stress, just my two cents though, Lighter should be fine if done for a little at a time, but it is BEST to have 0% Light during the dark period,

Get a green LED head lamp.....

If you need to spend some time in your grow room/tent then get a green light like Dr Who said. If you just need to take a quick peek for a couple minutes it won't affect anything. I have been checking on plants in the middle of the night cycle for years with no adverse effects. A couple minutes isn't going to make your plants hermie or start to reveg.

Use a weak light source or shade it with a stocking or something. No concentrated lights like a flashlight - especially a high output one!
But yeah, that works ok too!

Thanks for the responses guys. I'll look into one of those headlamps. I had a hermie first grow due to light issues, second grow now and I don't want another hermie lol

It's more really like hard to get hermies from minor light issues...... More problems from accidental increased lighting times then any "pin hole" light leak.

That was exactly the problem. Use to do it manually but I was too excited and started smoking samplers. It was so strong I couldn’t wake up in time xD

I interupt the dark cycle all the time, its just a loose rota to work off

If you exchange the air in your tent enough then the humidity of the air outside and in will equalize. In all geography weather stations the hygrometer was always shaded and boxed, without this radient heat from light sources will cause warming of the sensor and incorect readings. Prob why lots have sub 30% humidity in their tents, very rare for any plants.

If you have a 1x1x2m tent and above 100cfm exhaust fan it would be impossible to create a stable pocket of air with wich humidity can rise or fall.

I hope the physics of the principles are easy to understand

a lighter is probably not enough to kick them into something bad, but you probably dont want to make that a nightly routine because imo, thats a bad habit with a lighter lol


People veg plants at 12/12 with an hour interruption during the middle of the dark period, light leaks can be bad in flower if its consistent & bright enough but its not going to come from a lighter.

I agree with green led's for checking them, if its an RGB style led then it is very important that only the green on the diode is illuminated while you are working.
