infamous kief run

So since the last time I posted I made a few good connections at the clinics who were donating for it, and now I have access to as much outdoor trim as I can possibly use for insanely low prices. I'd much rather be getting indoor trim, but it's literally 5x what I'm paying on the outdoor, and no one has complained at all. I plan on doing an 11 lb extraction by the end of the weekend but was considering kiefing half, then blasting it in small tubes. I have tried blasting large amounts of kief before, but naively put 5 ounces of kief in a glass tube and expected rubber bands and coffee filters to hold. Needless to say I lost 3 of the 5 ounces due to this mistake. Could have been muuuch worse.
That experience turned me off of kief runs and my partner and I went back to normal coffee grind then blasting the trim. However, my connect has offered me even crazier prices if I am able to process more at once. The cost of butane after kiefing has me pretty fascinated. I kiefed some of this last batch and got the 5 ounces from 4 lbs. I figure I'll kief til I get about a half pound, then blast that one ounce at a time in a much smaller glass tube. I would also use a metal clamp and stainless steel mesh filter this time rather than rubber bands and coffee filters. Does anyone have experience doing this much kief in a small tube?

A buddy of mine has done this with a 6 inch tube and 1 1/2 diameter. He used unbleached coffee filters and rubber bands just have to use 3 or more rubber bands. If you do use the steel mesh put 2 coffee filters under it so you filter out as much plant matter as possible. He got a thick ass chuck of peanut butter from it. Me personally. I use a blender and keif but put the keifed green into my tube and the keif packed on top of it. I did a 4 oz run (the green and keif came out to 4 ounces) and I got 17.5 grams back. But that's just how I do it.

In my experience using a soak method with kief works much better the n blasting It

Butane is such a high solvent it can desolve carbon material (plant matter) and since keif isn't just tch there is still plant matter left. I use a glass tube (open extractor). If I were to fill my tube with kief I would blast until there was only about 2 inches of material in my tube (my tube is roughly 17.5 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide) whatever is left is the carbon material of the plant. Just toss that.
I don't use a closed extractor because butane will start desolving carbon material if it starts to sit. You don't want plant matter in your oil. But the oil you get from a kief run should be golden blonde and thick like peanut butter :)

We plan on doing a dry-ice extraction when we get enough material. Seems like a good method to "go keifin'' :weed:

While most sources list n-Butane as insoluble in water, its actual solubility is 0.0325 vol/vol, at 1 atmosphere pressure and 20C/68F. That is 32 ml/liter, which may be enough to account for the light electric green hue that occurs, by both washing away the WSCP and holding some of the chlorophyll in suspension.
