For the sake of saving time I hope its OK I post this here. How high should I place my 180w LED full spectrum light?
\It depends on the lens angle. The shallower the angle the hiher from the canopy

Place your hand, or a white envelop, under the light and lower it until you see where the intensity drops off. Keep the canopy above that

Yeah, at this point, I think you're right. I'm going to get a 2 or 3 bulb splitter, some cord and put my own thing together with some Cree bulbs. I might choose something else later on down the road, but it seems like the best choice at this point. Thanks for the suggestion. :)
Really nothing to lose, ten year warranty and home depot just gives you a new one no questions asked.

If you get tired of the cree bulbs our don't like their performance (which I doubt seeing what captain did with them) just use them around the house/apt:-) I have them for general lighting and they rock......very nice dimming on old switches.

OH, one more thing to greengenes, hey man, I am considering the bulb way, not bad choice, I just was sick of the whole ghetto cfl look, but after looking into it, its not a bad choice at all. hey, what bulbs exactly work good for growing? these spotlight looking ones? or the ones that look just like a incandescent bulb? I actually found some pretty cool looking ones, again, there are 1000's of choices, so that lands me back to square one! lol, hey, thanks a lot for any help I can get!
These...

And proof of concept if you didn't find this already...

looks like we are in the same boat. I was asking just about the same questions as you at the same time..i should had just read yr posts. lol. so these Cree style work pretty good you guys?? better then the cfl's? I assume they are quite a bit cooler running, and less wattage....any more advantages?

i am setting up 72 plants I was going to use x6 600w but I thought if I used led I would save on electric and it would pay for its self and also would be better for the heat as i live in the uk! what kind of led's would i have to use to replace my 6 600s and get the same results?? and also could i use a smaller fan with the leds?

almost 3x less wattage than a 26w Cfl and putting out almost 3x the umols/ too.

Mr Flux did a graph for me [look his shizz up] on the Cree bulbs, right before RIU's update, but in a private message, that is fawkin gone now....I think?

He was surprised, and close / same as the efficiency as other "mainstream" fixtures per math.....
[[[[[[[The blue....which I found is actually 423X-K and not 5000k like they advertised, any one else caught this?

I almost think you could run the 5k's as veg/flower by themselves......

Found it

Yes I have seen that capt. Morgan is doing very well. I have checked out the bulbs you mentioned and the Cree ones are actually pretty good. I have not been following bulbs lately so thanks for bringing it up. Hope you start messing around with some soldering though, you can find really cheap LEDs on ebay, that's how I started and it's alway been great fun.

Here is the graph comparing the bulbs:

Here are the numbers:
Code:
Philips A19
Power in : 10.97 W (123.00V x 0.09A)
Luminous flux : 817 lumen
Efficacy : 74 lumen/W
LER : 322 lumen/W
Radiometric eff.: 23.1%
Radiant flux : 2.54 W
Rel.quantum eff.: 86.3% (McCree 1972 RQE data)
Photon flux : 12.42 umol/s (1.13 umol/J, RQE adjusted 0.98 umol/J)
420-480 nm blue : 10.1% power, 7.9% photons
620-680 nm red : 24.6% power, 27.4% photons
Lux to photons : 65.8 lux:umol/m2/s

Cree Globe 2700K
Power in : 9.60 W (123.00V x 0.08A)
Luminous flux : 849 lumen

Photon flux : 12.90 umol/s (1.34 umol/J, RQE adjusted 1.17 umol/J)
420-480 nm blue : 7.3% power, 5.7% photons
620-680 nm red : 26.3% power, 29.0% photons

Hey Folks,
A local lighting store has a variety of LEDs on sale. Both bulb and flood types. They have these ones for $25 each which seems to be about the best price anywhere;
LINK

I'm new to growing in general and currently am using CFLs, but am worried about heat problems later in the summer as it warms up around here.

So I'm thinking about making a flowering light panel using 4-5 of these. The grow space is a 2x2.5ft cabinet with about 3ft of vertical space work with above the 2 plant DWC container. Here are a couple questions.
1. Lets say I have 4 of these mounted in there, they would be putting out 3,600 lumens at 2700K color temp. Is 3,600 lumens adequate for 2 plants? They have some 3000K ones as well, so I could mix and match for more spectrum?
2. Anybody have a guesstimate of how fay away I'll need to keep the lights from the canopy? I'm concerned that I'll reach my cabinet ceiling too quickly with LEDs vs CFLs since I can keep those 3-6 inches away. I'm referring to the right room in the picture.

Thanks to all you knowledgable and experienced people in advance.

I would stick with the cree 9w 2700k bulbs from homed depot for flower, 5000k for veg/clone and-or add ins for flower===more light never hurts if you can cool it .................run them the same as your cfl's, very close. buy as many as you can afford. If heat becomes a problem just remove some bulbs......easy peasy:)

BTW you need to upgrade your "circulation" fans..........those computer fans ain't gonna cut it in the summer.

good luck and be safe

thanks for the awesome mr flux info^^^^ very helpful .............would rep you if I could abiqua.............anyone know if it's possible atm???

You would need 6 of the larger LED panels, or 10-12 medium ones. The 560-watt Chinese panel I'm trying puts out way less radiant heat than an air-cooled 600w. Eventually they will heat up your room though. I'm guessing you can get away with about half the exhaust fan power, as compared to the 600w.

Unfortunately UPS smashed my panel up, but it still works. I don't like the T5 style hangers though, can't get it high enough. I'll have to try 4 rope ratchets instead. I wonder if the more expensive panels have stronger metalwork? It was packed pretty well too, but not well enough to survive those bastards.

Thanks for the info. Yep just finished up installing air inlets in the bottom and outlets on the top of both chambers with duct fans today actually, those PC fans are just to move the leaves.

These flood lights caught my interest because all their light is directed downward, and they are all marked with how wide the light footprint is, which is nice to know. Also like the idea of have less bulb sockets to deal with. Haven't done the math yet but will need to figure out if fewer big bulbs or more small bulbs will get more bang for the buck.

so do you have to point these crees a certain angle>? what works best, directing the light from the side, by running them sideways, or shine them directly down, by hanging them verically? I know the expensive led lighting systems have to be angled properly so it made me wonder

Like GG707 recommended you need to go talk to the CaptainMorgan in his thread, (link below). Actually you should read the whole thing. I'm pretty sure he did some readings of the CREE bulbs and found the latest batch's output to be pretty even all around, but I could be wrong. Best to ask him the questions you're asking. I hang mine horizontally with reflectors btw. Good Luck!

What, no reflector? I thought you were the "God of Ali"????? Everyone's just slacking around here, I swear :o. LOL

Just thought I'd let people know, it seems like bridgelux dropped the price on the VERO chips on digikey. About $15 for an '18 and $37 for a '29. It looks like they're adding a 4kK, 90CRI to the '29 line and a bunch of new chips for the '18 line including a 90CRI, 5600K emitter.

So I have a question about attaching COBS to a CPU heatsink. What are the pro's/con's of using a thermal adhesive like arctic alumia vs. Drilling and tapping the heatsink and using a thermal paste like arctic silver?
