Idiots Guide To Coco Coir

Has anyone tried the soil and flower tabs from nirvana? I had already ordered them by the time i realized that growing in coco isnt the same as growing in peat. So i was wondering what you guys thought on the subject. I emailed nirvana yesterday with basically the same question, I'll let you all now what they say when they reply. Thanks for the help

We see no reason why it shouldn't work. We use soil, but the coco/perlite mix should work as well.

I've run in a problem with my second coco grow. The two Sage 'n' Sours have been in coco/vulcaponic (~65/35) hempys for about a week and a half now and the growth has been really slow, they are still developing the first actual set of fingered leafs. Now that has bothered me for few days now, but yesterday I noticed that the leaves are somewhat droopy and quite pale green with a tint of yellow. Now after reading this thread I started suspecting pH and after checking I found out that there indeed was something wrong with the pH. Though I only have a liquid drop test kit with a piece of paper with the corresponding colours (which I dropped in the toilet) to compare the contents of the test vial, well I dont trust the thing too much, but the readings I got were around 6.5-7 ph for the bucket no. 1 and 7+ for the no. 2. I made a quick adjustment with tap water dropped down to around 5.5-5.8 pH until the water I got from the overflow hole was around 5.8-6.0 pH.

Now for the actual question. Could this have caused the symptoms I described above? Also I have canadian xpress ultimate indoor nutes for coco but I havent given it to the plants yet, however would that be advisable and at what strenght?

Now about a day later I've noticed improvement in the situation, plants are not nearly as droopy but the yellowish tint havent disappeared yet. Thinking of giving them both around half a liter of water with 1-2ml per liter canadian xpress ulticoco growth (normal dosage is 5-7ml / liter) and the normal dose of 10ml/l of BN Bioroots to see if it's about the lack of nutes in the medium. Post your ideas and possible advises on what I should do as I am relatively new to growing and ever greener with coco coir.

Problems arise again, the pH wont stay down. It will be okay for a while, but now couple hours after I flushed the buckets again to correct pH levels, the pH has started to rise again. If anyone got any good tips on how to get the pH stay down properly, please share them.

I seen your post in uncle Ben's thread and here to I am in coco and the Ph will rise as it dries but should top out at 6.8-7. I think you may now be suffering over water the reason for the yellowing the Ph will be fine just adjust to 5.6 with your nutes for watering. I would allow your coco to dry out for a few days or till its lite, I foilar feed in the time between watering just mix a normal batch of your nutes for one gallon or liter and spray the girls down once a day. I use this in my coco grow i have multi strains that like different things but they all like the foilar feeding. This will save money on nutes but allow you to feed regular. You know your garden use best judgment on time between watering.

hi all im currently growing white dwarf autos in canna coco using ionic nutes ive found with ionic that ive never needed to ph or flush with no problems just making sure i have a good runoff i just gradually built nute strength up and my ladies are 3 weeks from harvest with a nute strength of 16 looking pretty good

Did anyone answer your question? 'cause I got the same one. Researched the web and got 50/50 "Works better everytime you re-use it" and "Re-using it is the recipe for disaster!" As usual. Your findings/subsequent experience?
Heard treating with hyrgrozyme helps kill any nasties, but wouldn't it kill any beneficials as well? (Anyone with Hygrozyme experience out there? How much per gallon/when do you apply?)

Oh yea......how'd you kill the fungus knats? Read they are more annoying than detrimental.

BTW, getting ready to run Hempys Coco/perlite Bucket with the FloraNova Bloom Lucas Formula:

Coco can be reused up to about three times before it starts to break down and effect your drainage.

Anything else? I have some experience with coco.

And if you do reuse your coco, you should run hygrozyme for at least the first few weeks.

Fungus gnats can be killed off by adding predatory nematodes ( a microscopic ring worm that feeds on the larvae) kill the rest of the adult with sticky fly traps.
I will add another 1 million nematodes to my coco when I grow the next harvest. They are pretty cheap 20 bucks for 1 million and they are nature vs nature pest control. If you do reuse your coco that was once infested with fungus gnats I would definitely drench the coco with azamx or gnatrol before reusing it or like I recommend get some predatory nematodes and kill those fungus gnat larvae.

Botanicare Coco, with coco croutons works great. The croutons give 20-30% more oxygen and better drainage. I'm using a modified lucas formula, and even though most coco is pre washed pretty well, I always flush really good. If not, all you have to do is check your runoff to see that it will be about 2000 ppm's or so.

I use coco all the time this was a clone that i put straight onto 12/12 and after 11 weeks feeding her every day with 6ml canna A and 6ml canna B with 6ml canna boost and 3ml pk13 in 2 ltr of water every day ! This was the result she is now being flushed for 2 weeks with plain ph'ed water at 6.0

Can you elaborate on why you think it's an ass backwards thing to do? Which part of what he does is incorrect? Watering every day?? The plant looks good to me, but maybe I'm missing something here.

Tip.....coco and rockwool should not be mixed , especially for a newbie,,,,they require a different ph and watering regime...wont hurt to finish ,but prob better not to do it.....anyway jmho.

that was harsh bro, he has a lot of good info. Try Gonats for your problem it will take care of the ones in your pots but those little suckers will live anywhere moist the easiest way to rid them is napalm.
