Im new to dwc , but not new to growing. I never wanted to do dwc, because how could the roots live in water 24/7? Well theres many power outages here random usually when it rains. So i scared myself not to do it hey we only live once so i did it. Air pumps well i got root rot ,but i learned so much tho. So i never failed just made me a better grower i saw failure ahead and success .
My idea came from a friend that got the gh performance pack and couldn't get extra cash to spend . He would just put one gallon of nutes and never got root rot, he did drip feed in the beginning. My roots werent always in water three gallons with zone only. Is that we drown the roots he never had that problem i would help him grow and he taught me also in coco roots i get are bright white . Not dwc tan white almost brown not so much root rot but i should worry.. ..An idea a theory if im wrong let me know. Oh ya 5 gallon buckets i was talking about. He has never done indoor before i have for years.

is your site of your plant covered so that no light is allowed in? and also what is your ppm?

If there's power outages, loss of bubbles is the least of your problems. Lack of oxygen may cause problems over time, but being out for a few hours (or even days) isn't going to kill it. If you use a mechanical timer, it will stop turning when power goes out, screwing up your light cycles by the amount of time your power was out.

Lowering the Water has helped i got new roots growing out of of the old roots. It seems to work from 3 gals to one gal then the next day 2 gallons so im at 2 gallons in a five gallon . Ya the hose was up against the walls. Timers are not the problem i got them with real time so if that happens i just set it when the power is restored..

There is a lot of problems that a DWC grower will encounter. The #1 is cyanobacteria, and this is due to the natural process of root regeneration. Roots die and then are replaced, plants do this all the time. And it doesn't matter what type of system they are in, soil or hydro, they will all shed roots. The TYPE of root that developes is the difference when comparing systems. You need microbes to digest dead roots and cycle nutrients from them back to the plant. Without them, the decaying roots will attract the cyanobacteria (which is already present, just dormant due to improper conditions) to now awaken and thrive. Oh and by the way, cyanobacteria love 02. As a matter of fact, the more 02 there is, the better the bacterial bloom. In a matter of hours the whole root system can be engulfed in a slimey goo, to which no amount of Zone or SM-90 will cure. Not H202 or bleach, the only thing that works is beneficial microbes.

Check out this it's the best tutorial I have ever found. And it works! https://www.rollitup.org/t/dwc-root-slime-cure-aka-how-to-breed-beneficial-microbes.361430/

That's fairly accurate, except cyanobacteria doesn't "awaken" from decaying roots. You either have it or you don't. Which is why people get it growing in cloners when there aren't any roots present. It can also come and go throughout the year and appear to be seasonal. Depending on the severity, the course of action will differ. Zone will clear less aggressive cyano, as will low levels of bleach and shorter intervals between maintenance. Even bad cases can clear out just from a good cleaning, but some aren't so lucky and have to rely on the beneficial bacteria.

If you're having root problems, get a more powerful air pump, bust the end off the airstone (you get more o2 in the water from surface agitation than you do from tiny bubbles), and get some hydroguard (Bacillus Amyloliquefaciens). Hydroponics (especially dwc) needs to either be completely sterile to thrive or loaded with good bacteria. Root issues are the main problem with dwc, but if you can master that section, you'll be rewarded in the end. No offense but if you've been doing this for years, you should know most of this stuff by now.

Dunbar Santiago im new to dwc not drip, coco, soilless or even dirt. This is way different that all i have to do is let any growing media dry out no root rot and i can use organics without worrying. Zone has done me right root hairs seem to be a problem also. Cmon commander this a new format and i have problems seeing my typing it wasnt a question more of what do you think any feedback kind of for my theory..i dont think my roots are that bad where lowering the water will affect them thats the idea i was asking..also i clean everything with bleach airhoses, stone, bucket.

Thanks for your advice. Bust the end off? Is there a way to know how much to bust off? I've not tried it before. Will there be a tube through it that I'll see? I'll give it a try after my next cleaning.

It's just a hollow stone with a 1/4 inch plastic nipple glued to the end. Just don't break off too much, you want it still heavy enough to sink to the bottom of the bucket.

Im doing great since lowering the water i have gotten new roots . Im very surprised that just common sense to lower the water one gallon from 3 gallons in a five gallon bucket ,two at first then back to two gallons. Confuseing i know .So i started at three gallons then on res change just added one gallon of nutes for 24 hours then added one more gallon so im at two gallons now. i used one gallon to dry out some of the rootsz, then the next gallon so to keep it from being dry.Its really seems to work im not saying it does for sure.i been very happy with my results. New roots no more problems. I do use dm zone just updating whats happening.
