I need some opinions on sound security

I live in a 3rd floor apartment, and I'm going to vent out a window that is about 20ft vertically and 20ft horizontally from a heavily trafficked walkway. I just bought a Can 8" HO 735cfm fan with a Can 75 filter. I haven't mounted them or run a ducting yet, but I turned it on just to hear it. Man, its pretty loud. I know I can reduce the noise with bungees and insulated ducting, and I really like that mounting box, but I'm worried about the sound of the airflow itself tipping people off. Does anyone have a similar sized setup? What does it sound like when you are outside in the vicinity of the vent? Should I get a muffler? I asked the owner of the hydro shop for one, but he said I didn't need it, even though he had them in stock. I figured he wouldn't pass on selling it to me unless I really didn't need it. Would a muffler reduce the noise of the airflow? What do you guys think? Please tell me something to ease my mind.

This is a duplicate of my post in the sound control thread, but I didn't get any replies there.

how many girls are you doing? the reasone i ask this is cause if it's a high traffic area you really dont want to vent the smell out to it. you wood be doing better just scrubbing the smell in the room. unless ur useing as your exhaust to. ?????

I'm not worried about smell, that's what the Can 75 is for. Its actually quite a bit larger than what I need. I visited the can website, and calculated that I needed a Can 66 with a 6" HO Can fan. The hydro shop agreed, but he didn't have that in stock so he gave me the 75 and 8" fan for the same price. And from what I've heard about Can filters, I'm confident that nobody will smell a thing.

But to answer your question, I'm planting 8" apart in a 4'x8' flood table, so about 72 plants.

Do you have a link? Where did you get yours?
i got 2, ther everywer. try your hydro store,or a hardwar store. it's called a router speed control. hydro first,if not ther harbor frieght hardwer store carrys them. it's a big help with weather changes...... to hot and hum...turn it up to cold turn down. but as wel as i've been told to is that when u pull ur smell threw the filtr at a slow medium speed it filtrs smell better. how true i don't know. but heres a peace of mind for..... myself i'm in full flowering rite now and i turned a full bed room into wat it is and i got 20 girls and the house doesn't even have a sent of it..and i'm useing it as exhaust to and my attic dos not even smell eather. no bull bro!! i'm actuall blown away by it myself. i expected the attic stink a bit which worryed me a bit cause then it goes into the niehborhood lololol ya know lol. dam noise nabors. but anyhow. they do work from what i got go n rite this min. i'm useing a dragon filtr. anyhow let me know if you find one. or if you run into any other delays. love to help!!!

you're right about pulling air slower thru the filter being more effective, and I'm not worried about smell. I'm worried about people walking by and hearing it. Does anyone have any experience with this. where a vent is led outside, what does it sound like in the vicinity of the vent?

$20 at harborfrieght, and there is one 15 minutes away...sounds like my solution, thanx bro

awsome !!!!! glad to hear it! no prob!! you'll be surprised....it's not gonna be real loud. plus when you think about it how people are really trying to listen for fans! lolol everyone has way to much are ther mind to care about a fan.

u can hear my 180cfm can fan when its on from the outside of my standalone home. its a faint but persistant whinning/vibration sound. sounds similiar to a washing machine . hard to decern wut it truly is ...cuz a bunch of different items cause sound. although i tweaked about it for a couple weeks, the noise has become "normal" to my ears, and my girlfriend says i trip too much about little stuff that she doesnt even notice, or anyone else.....but the stealthier the better right?

i totaly agree with both of you...... but in my opion with my fans...i've notice that the little ones very loud and humming sound wer my big one just sound like a dryers on. plus depending on how long ur ducting is to it the sound will die out. at least thats what mine has done. but better safe then sory cause we are trying not to be in same tax braket.... lololol
