Yup , ph is only half the reason people have so much trouble with lockout , excessive nutes cause lockout even easier than out of whack ph , an improper mixture of Macro & Micro nutes can cause lock out even at low ppm .
i can second this,as i have just gone threw exact same thing,

good :)
i just lowered ppm by half and put a new clone in yesterday ..... just waiting now :)
overferting in my case threw up cal/mag deficiency symptoms (rusting, spotting),some people mistake this and add MORE nutes
(yes me included) LESS is defo more in my case.

I've seen the same symptoms a number of times. I had perfectly good clones start to act funny in veg. They just sat there like they were stoned or something. They didn't die but they didn't grow either. Tried messing with nutes, PH, you name it... nothing worked. The res and roots didn't smell funky either. It didn't look like root rot but I suspected some sort of pathogen had infected the plants. Given time I've see the plants come around but the only way I was able to get rid of the issues was ditch the infected plants and start with healthy, clean clones.

PH lockout is pretty rare, you really have to be off quite a bit to effect nutrient uptake. Every nutrient has a different range too so you never lockout everything unless you really fuck up. Usually if your PH is moving that's a sign something else is wrong.

High PPM - your plants will be really dark green. You may see the leaves turn brittle and curl down like a bird's claw. You may also see some tip burning. The leaves will NOT be yellow. I extreme cases you may burn the plants but you really have to go overboard for this to happen. They guys that recommended starting out low and moving the PPM up were spot on. Go slow and watch your plants. If you do over fertilize your plants the damage will not recover. Watch the new growth for changes.

Low PPM - could show up with different symptoms depending on which nute the plant needs most. Low nitrogen will cause the lower leaves to turn yellow as the nitrogen is transferred from the old growth to the new growth. If you see the new growth turning yellow first that's usually something other than Nitrogen deficiency. Low Cal/Mag and many other mineral deficiencies will show up as dead spots, funky coloring, etc... Truth is you could write a book on causes and cures but the truth is why fuck around. Just change the res and be done with it. A fresh res at 600ppm, ph 5.8 shouldn't burn rooted clones.

You know the guy that asked you about Oxygen? He may have been on to something. The symptoms you describe match what happens to plants when you over water them in soil. I'm sure that's what he was thinking the first time he read your post. Of course this may have nothing to do with the problem but remember, plants need lot's of air to the roots, the more the better.

Good luck bro!
