hygrometers

So to protect against mold in my jars i bought a hygrometer. It was cheap and wasnt consistent... or so i thought...

So i went to a cigar shop and got a good digital one.... now why would the rh rise even more after the hygro was in the jar for more than an hour?

After 1/2 hour i was at 58%. Perfect. But after 1.5 hours it was at 65. At two hours it at 68? That doesnt make sense to me. The rh has to be the same from hour to hour... it cant go up. Yet i know the hygro is accurate...

How long do these things need for an accurate reading?

Ya...

Just checked them this AM. They are much wetter now so they mustve still been equalizing. Think they topped out at 74%

Thinking i shoul maybe dump the jars for 1/2 day or a full day...seems too wet...

Too wet, you're the the right thing, dump them. I use Boveda humipacks in my jars, they help to control and keep the jars at 62 you should google. Boveda. Great product

It usually takes 12 - 24 hours for the humidity to stabilize in the jar. Take out of the jar, spread them out until they feel dry on the outside again, then put them back in the jar for another day and check again. I keep doing this until after a 24 hr. period they still feel dry - then I open the lid for a few minutes everyday to let in fresh air for about another 2 weeks. Then I only open them about once a month. My cure is always good and I have never used a hygrometer.

I messed up a bit at this stage and lost a bit to mold... so figured a hygrometer would help me learn... so far so good...

I looked into those... so do they suck up moisture to keep at 62 only? Or do they also release moisture when the bud gets too dry?

Thats part of the reason why i havent pulled the trigger... 2ant to know exactly how they work... also i would need 18 of them, which is a 100 bux...ouch...lol

Buy a few to start, buy the ones that say 62 they work both ways, keep the humidity up and down, I have some in jars dated to 2004 and it is still very fresh. It also depends if your looking for longtime or short term storage but either way getting a 4 pack at $1.25 each is well worth it.
Good luck and keep reading up on it.

I just bought 6 hygros last week & a member told me that the RH will rise for about the first week because the bud is still moist, he also told me that if it rises faster than 1 degree per hour that I should take my bud out of the jar & let it dry for a few hours before putting back in the jar. He also said that if it goes above 75%rh that I should take it out & let it dry more.
good luck!

So went to the cigar shop and i bought a 75 boveda to calibrate my hygro for 6.00, which was a waste because it is spot on...lol

Also bought the 62s for the jars for .95 each which was a helluva deal compared to Amazon...

You can calibrate your hygrometer with a bottle cap and salt - doesn't cost anything.

I get mine at http://www.planetvape.ca/boveda-humidipak-8-gram-pak.html
Boveda Humidipak 8 gram Pak. $1.29 each free shipping.

The 8 gram Boveda Humidipak is the replacement pak for the Small, Medium, Large and X-Large CVaults.

How It Works
2-way humidity control works by continually responding and adjusting to the outside temperature and climate by either adding or removing humidity as needed to maintain a 62% level of relative humidity (RH) inside of packages and containers.
By maintaining your product at an ideal and constant relative humidity, means your product will not lose or gain any moisture. Instead, your product will be maintained at its ideal moisture level throughout its intended shelf life and/or usage life.
Combine the Boveda Humidipak with a CVault and your product will never encounter any moisture fluctuations, keeping it fresh and perfectly humidified, waiting for you to enjoy.

Hmmmm.... i dunno.... i jarred up some bud and 24 hours later the humidity was 64%. Dropped a Boveda 62 in the jars and they held there for about 30+ hours.

And so i figured i could leave them for a few days. Today those jars are reading 73%.

So.... i dunno.... what to think about these Boveda things...
