Hydroponics, plants don't smell much?

Hi,

My first time doing Aero/Nft. Before that I had a grow in soil/ -ess peat/perlite/vermiculite.

I had a go at that time with the THC Bomb. Already when it was late vegging --> preflowering it smelled pretty nice and, you know, like good weed.

But now in hydro in kinda doesn't smell much to be honest. They are not flowering, only starting to preflower, but it doesn't smell nothing much. It's more of a regular-lawn-grassy smell. The leaves look more, how would say it, they seem to have higher water retention. They are not clawing (very little maybe) or anything. This time I am not growing (yet) the THC Bomb, but Northern Lights, White Widow Max and White Rhino, and they all smell kinda the same — not much! Perhaps it will kick in in later phases...

So my question is:

Is it normal in hydro?
Is it the strains I am growing?
Or is something wrong?

Thanks everyone.

I am using hydro for my 1st grow...I tried a clone and it rieked to high heaven so deleted/threw in trash :( Grew this bean in hydro, no smell thus far. The clone I bought smelled 10x more than this <pic> at the same height. Does anyone know why a clone can stink way more than a plant of equal size?P1010522.JPG P1010525.JPG

Thanks guys. They starting to bud now, the left unit. I have one more unit on the right you can't see, will be putting there new batch next week. What worries me is that the plants don't smell much when you rub the leaves or the buds. Don't get me wrong, you get a whack of smell upon walking in, but when you rub them nothing much, and they are not very sticky.

When I had a grow in soil, oh man!, how they smelt. You could wear as fucking parfume :). Does this occur with hydros?

I've noticed smell is pretty much strain specific, I've had a couple of grows that didn't smell

Okay, that's consoling actually. However, I am running 3 strains (White Widow, White Rhino, Northern Lights) concurrently so the odds are small that all 3 of them wouldn't smell much; but then again, everything is possible.

Not quite sure ...1st time grow...I do know that certain strains can smell 2x as much as similar size plants. SFV is one that smells fucking awesome but is also pungent as fuck. What strains do you prefer?
I can't really says, because I have had a long hiatus in smoking and am very new to indoor growing. I have down only one previous indoor grow, and that was in soil. It was THC Bomb and I mean that shit smelled incredible. Seriously, if you want pungent weed THC Bomb is incredible and sticky as fuck. Kinda strong happy high. Lemonish tones to the smell. What I am growing now doesn't smell more than fuckin' cabbage, but we will see what the final product is :)

Same breeder? Could have just selected plants with other traits or characteristics that were more important to them, but in all honesty if your plants look healthy you should be lucky to not have a pungent smell and your just entering flowering, it should get more pungent.

The pics aren't the greatest. The camera isn't the best and it just degrades the quality under the light. But in real life they look just lovely and it smells just sweet, they literally have a sweet smell. I take it all back :). But the leaves and veg state smells, well cabage would smell more haha

Yeah, I did top them. I actually fimmed them first, but I was't happy with the results, so I topped them then. How many colas, it's hard to say, there are still more reaching up through the netting. I cannot say yet, I am not expereienced enough to make such prediction. We will see, I'll keep posting :)

I am not very happy with my 2nd unit. I have different strains there, Northern Lighs and they werent feminized, as I got them as a bonus. Today I pulled out second male, out of 4. And they are so slow to flower, one of them still aint showing (they have to be autos or some), besides the NL are more sativied and are stretchy as fuck compared to the indicas. We will see how it goes, might be worth it in the end.
