HPS vrs CFL vrs LED....opinions on what's better??

I think that the discussion here needs to examine depth of penetration (DoP) of the light source. Let's stick with the 400w range, & below, for autos.

CFL- Low wattage bulbs 40 real watts or less. The use-full range of light is as little as 4" & tops at 7". Can be placed from adjacent to an inch away.
CFL-Hi wattage 55 to 105 (105 is the largest I've run) DoP is form 9 to 15". Can be placed from 2" to 5" from plant.

LED- 1w bulbs (anything less than this isn't worth using) DoP is around 10 to 14". Can be placed within 3" of plant.
LED - 3w diodes running full. DoP is close to 30", but it can't be closer than 14 to 18" of the canopy.

HID- In general we're talking about hps, DoP is 36" (400w) With good vented hood can be placed within 12" of plant

So nothing can match the lumens or DoP of HPS but the color spectrum is by far the worse. The HPS is the bully of lighting.
Because of the spectrum I've been running Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH) bulbs. These put out white light and are really a full spectrum bulb, they even put off useable IR & UV. They put off less than 1/3 the heat, in the winter I run dual 400 bulbs in a single un-vented OPEN hood

They put over less lumens compared to HPS 33,000 vs 48,000 but the spectrum is much better. Only problem is that Philips is discontinuing the HPS Retro-White


IMO now that LED makers are finally using white diodes and higher wattages, that LED is the future of indoor growing. Either LED or Plasma but the price of plasma still really high.

Newby question.... when your talking about wattage for cfl's, are you adding up the watts its actually using or the equivalent output they have. ie: a 13w cfl is advertised as a 60w regular bulb.
actual wattage bro. I am a hps guy for flower and cfl for veg. I really like that combo.

If you have a small grow area go with CFL's. They are your best bet! This was grown with CFL's

I've wondered for a while what is the better lighting a grower can use, not taking into account cost of electricity etc

I personally have only used hps but I hear so many ppl using cfl

What's the differences?

i rarely watch tv i just read mostly
i watch the news
and some youtube anonymous mostly
but the tv shows designed to keep you on the couch drinking a beer and ignoring reality
dont hold my intrest

So as I understand it most ppl have different views on the subject, and cfl and hps are the most used sources of light. Hps has excellent DoP but poor spectrum and cfl doesn't have the impact of a hps but the spectrum is way better??

So what's induction lighting?? Seein as I'm the noob I might need some of you knowledge on past experiences with this!

Yea gotta agree...tek knows his shizzle and has the proof to back it up...not many ppl have the info to hand and generally talk crap!

Is there anything that could/can combine the cfl and hps together or would this be futile??

induction is a flouro with no internal contacts so it lasts a very long time
it uses electromagnets to excite particles inside the tube
supposedly its spectrum is the closest to sunlight available
there also pretty powerful with less heat from what i understand
cfl's on steriods

like i said all i do is read the problem comes in when i try to produce the documents i read for an example
i keep very little browser history im old skool and a little paranoid when it comes to electronic tracking
so if i cant remember exactly where i saw it then it's just useless info with no backing :)
and i think mr.outdoor has the right idea
brute force of the 1000w
and 1200w of induction
that is nuts brother

they claim the induction to to have almost twice the usable light as a hps
from your experience do you find this to be true ?
if this is so your induction foot print should be bleaching the yellow of the HPS out where they meet on the canopy
