How to Use an Industrial Low Bay Light Fixture?

I just did a Ford dealership replacing all their lights, there are about 60 400watt MH fixtures they are just tossing. Needless to say I have a HUGE stock pile of these things :)

Just modifying them to keep the ballast remote and throwing them into fixtures, sure does save TONS of $$

nice score. i worked at a building that was being turned into a storage shed facility and we changed all the 400w MH fixtures to fluorescent fixtures. i grabbed 2 of the MH fixtures and a buddy of mine grabbed a couple. the owner was going to try and sell them but he gave u a couple each. and not sure if he sold the rest or not. they were all just sitting in a pile when the job was over.

most of these types of fixtures are easy to make remote, but a few manufacturers make you do a little more work to get them remote ballasts.

If using a hooded reflector, they often have the cordset with them. That's how I buy them at least. I removed the socket and its leads but just wired the new cordset directly to the 115V leads from the transformer. Leave the ballast on the ground. I buy them with bulbs - 400 watts - for around $20. The bulbs? USED! Buy new ones for $26 from Amazon. Most use M59.

I have 2 400-watters I bought for $20 apiece with the bulbs. No light meter and the bulbs take a bit to charge but they are damned sure bright. I just disassembled and rewired the socket with 12-gauge wire to a hood. Bought those used on craigslist. Use them to keep my 1000 watt HPS for my sativas

Funny thing that recently I've seen that happen, but only until the next time I visit the page, which often is a day or two later, or after someone relipes, the usual, etc. I have to say that I love this thread and in the spirit of passion for the plant and I appreciate all of the effort that everyone (except you know it alls... you fuckers really annoy the fuck out of me because you might as well belive in carbon credits or some stupid shit like that) takes and makes to share the info here. As I get my garden in the shape I want (slower than previously thought because of scheduling conflicts from my help) I will be posting pics and vids. I too enjoy sharing what I know and learning from one another. This is one of those rare threads that can really get minds and hearts igninted.
