How To Tell When A Long Flowering Sativa Is Finished

i have a 1995 Skunk #1. she is in here 13th week of flower. i have fried here leafs, but bud development still looks decent. since i have no leafs i can not just give it the ol' trichrome test. the buds are slowly starting to tighten up and the calyxes are well formed and just seem to be getting frostier. the buds are fucking gigantic. like seriously the size of my forearm. one is at least an ounce and the others are in the 10-15g range easily. the tips of the bigger buds have new stigmatas growing. the ends seem to be fattening up more and getting plumper. i have no idea when to harvest her. i started flush well over 10 days ago, probably about 15 days by now. i thought she would be done by now. there is a few seeds in here. i do not see the seeds being finished. one seeds has color and the other is fat as fuck and white. im guessing i should wait til the seeds finish. but if the buds are done, then i should pull them. i know what to look for when a plant is finished. they have that certain glow to them, however, with the lack of leafs, i am having a major time deciphering when she will be done, of if maybe she has been finished already. please assist me. what should i be looking for. is it possible she still has another month to go? in that case should i feed her for another 2 weeks. i have pics, but the glow of the HID makes it hard to see the colors in the pic. i have pics, if you need to see them, just ask. thanks in advance for the help!!:leaf:

I check the trichs for milky/amber and if I see any, cut a small bud off and quick dry it. If I get really high, then I chop her down.

which Widow are you growing? I know the heritage of Widow, but i was under the impression Widow was done in under 10 weeks then you can add the week or 2 of darkness. you may have a special Widow or something, but Brazilian, Indian and the other one, made it a equal sativa indica. i suppose it depend son the breeder. lot swill argue who created the real Widow. an acquaintance of mine says Greenhouse because they are the first ones to win the Cannabis Cup in 1995. but some say Mr Nice has the original one. so its all up to debate. i love White Widow, but i hate the myths and bullshit behind it. all i know is in 1998 i paid $45 for 4g off a good good friend of mine and that shit was soooooooooooo tasty and fucked me up so bad. i think that bag lasted me and my roommate like a week!!

ill get to those pics. i may be able to last another 4 weeks, but fuck me!! give me a minute, i have company stopping by and im installing a new R/O and Booster Pump. so ill be back and forth.

yeah... that's what i did with my first beginning to end grow, very unscientific like. i just harvested when it looked like my plants weren't growing any more and that i'd reached that forever moment, but i KNOW i harvested early because my C99 beans were greenish and so far, i haven't gotten any to pop yet. as much as i hate couchlock though, i'd rather err on the side of harvesting early than too late any day. you mostly just give up some extra weight doing that.

next time though, i'm recording flowering times and aiming for the recommended ones to get it right and to get the best yield possible as i ran out of my C99 quickly. i also started flowering too soon and had half a dozen gals all under 2 1/2 feet tall, but i'm still happy as the smoke kicked EVERYTHING'S ass that i've wasted money on since the late 80s and it was the first time i was able to resist my urge to "get high right now... there's weed in the other room that'll get you there. you know you want to." LOL

i'll be getting a photographer's loupe or at least a good magnifying glass to check trichromes. i'm harvest everything at the first sign of them turning amber or frosting over. one of the grow guides i used to have said wait until the 20% mark to harvest, but that's too late for me. i'd rather have the best buzz than that last few grams or percentage of potency.

i don't get what you mean about having no leaf. have you been taking trim? otherwise, your plants aren't going to have much in the way of growth energy i imagine. leaves do most of the light gathering.

i know why your seeds from her did't pop. i bet you tried planting them right away, yeah? when you harvest seeds, you have to let them sit for at least 4-6 weeks, then you can plant them. if you did wait, then you who knows what could have happened. and AGAIN!!!! there are no leafs. they got fried off or sum shit, i can't explain it. so the trichromes i see are on the calyxes. which are smaller and harder to tell if in finished form. PLUS!!! Sativa plants do NOT frost up like that. the leafs are practically frost-less. i know it sounds odd, but this is how the oldschool strains are. that is why, and because they take forever to finish, is why you can not find them on the market. a lot of the old Hazes are frost less. or so the pics i have seen have been. indica dominant plants are more rich in trichrome production. or so i have been told. i will post pics here shortly. but with the HID being so bright, its very hard to tell. the bottoms of the buds look more finished then the tops. the tops look like they just grew new stigmatas. its so strange!!

Old school sativa can be a bit tricky in the beginning to tell when finished. I grow almost exclusively sativas or sat dom some take 16 weeks or longer to mature and never really get finished in the way that indicas do or even most hybrids. If you are checking the trichs you need to check the older growth over the new growth as the new will always be more immature. Looking at the older bud parts you probably will be looking at between 80 to 100% cloudy/milky. Sativas don't like the amber color it will ruin your smoke and give a F***ed up high or the uplift of the sativa high when just ripe.
Good Luck with her sativas are the best

Ok, you have been told this 100 times but I will say it again..

IF you actually DID cross and pollenate your C99 (which I dont believe) you admit to cutting it down THREE WEEKS IN FLOWER. Its a miracle you got GREEN SEEDS.

2. There is more than "adding weight" going on over the next 5-12 weeks of flowering. Thats why you should NEVER be telling people how C99 grows or smokes, you have no idea how it grows and smokes.

3. If you ever do grow a plant to harvest (which I also doubt) you will learn more in ONE grow than you have learned in 10 years of "reading everything on the net". After, you will come back and apologize for spouting false information for years.

My number 1 advice to you, Hazey. Stop trying to fool people into thinking you know something. Just go do it. Grow 1 batch from beginning to end and actually learn something thats real and not rehashed mess you read somewhere else.

I would suggest doing a grow journal and actually TAKING advice from real growers. Post updates, let people help you get to the end. You will learn so much from it, it will be night and day.

As far as how to tell about sativa being ready. I agree with one of the other posters. Nip a bud off, quick dry it and give it a try. Ive heard you can lose as much as 30% potency quick drying like that, NOT SURE how true it is, but it does lose something. If a bud is getting me ripped, then generally ill toss it into 48 hours of darkness then cut.
I quick dry in the oven around 200 degrees for about an hour or so.

NO NEGATIVITY AROUND HERE!! if you people want to bitch and argue, please start your own thread.

ok, the leafs got fried off by either having here to close to the light, over feed, or something else, maybe both. anyways, the buds on her are HUGE and MASSIVE!! that was the only factor in me keeping here alive or i would have chopped her in here 4th week. i have posted up some pics of the buds. they are huge as fuck!! the biggest bud weighs 160g wet, and should be about 2oz dry. NICE!!! so here is a couple of pics...please no negative vibes, just positive comments around here.

and i have a way better fast dry method then the oven or the microwave, BLAH!!Huge Buds!! 004.jpg

So did you chopped it, or just a few colas? If so, how did you decide it was ready? I have two Sativas in flowering now that are 120+ day finishers. They might finish with the next round of indicas I throw in after the ones that are in with them now finish up in a month or so.

120+ days? jesus that would be.. difficult for me. Id have to have them in own room and have other strains going somewhere else. you should post pics of everything you have your posts fascinate me.

I understand not liking people speaking on things they have yet to master, but as a novice who is here to learn from those like you with much experience, why so aggresive? I actually mean to pose that question quite literally, i just wish to know how to conduct myself, besides what is explained with the FAQ and other new user materials

Thank you,

Go do a long read on Hazey grapes. The guy spent years talking a bunch of bs and not having any experience at all. I mean years and years of time telling people how to grow and what to grow when he had no real experience growing anything himself. He was a pretender with some serious issues. As you see, that started with you have been told 100s of times. Meaning it was not an isolated incident.
