How to setup basic ventalation for grow room?

Ok so the area I have intended has no ventalation, and a couple of doors I can close the area in. All I have is a small fan. I open it a couple times dailiy to get some fresh air in. So I figured an exhaust fan would be the first step. I bought a cheapie nutone from home depot. Havent a clue as to where to install it within the room. I am guessing up high near the top as heat rises? I really need some help as to how to set up the ventalaltion in this room. Where to place fans, exhaust fan, where to runt he ducting from the HPS light, how and where to set up carbon filtering? I really need a few pics of a simple setup with a few plants, instead of these massive grow rooms for reference. Any link or advice is greatly appreciated.

have a look at mine titled "my setup" on the second page of this section of the forums.

As you will see the carbon filter is at the top, which is naturally the exhaust... as you said, heat rises.

give pictures of your room, whats the dimensions? is it going to be in the whole room, closet, tent, cabinet?

Ok onto the question. First off how are the hoods vented? In pictures I think the socket and bulb fits in one side and the heat is ducted out the other? Does the bulbs heat simply travel out the ducting without any fan or anything blowing it through the tubing? Next how does that carbon filter worK? It look to be installed over the hood? What size would be sufficent to dissapate all odor from saw 4 plants max? Where does one place intake and exhaust fans. I am guessing intake is lower so plants get fresh air and exhaust is highter up. I was planning on using a whole closet instead of a cabinet? Any suggestions on how to setupon a minimal budget?

You should check threw a few setups around here and get some ideas

Hiro has some great fan and filter stuff going on there

You can see he has his exhaust with a filter in the cabinet before it leaves the box which ensures the there will be fresh air leaving the cabinet and it is up at the top of the cabinet to grab the hot air also

Ok I hate to sound like a dummy here but I am still looking at pics trying to figure out. I aprreciate the pics, but everyone is saying just look around and figure it out. Well I can't there seems to be allots of stuff going on, and kinda just want to know what to put where and how to hook it up in detail. I have looked on the nw but there is allot of hrdroponice growers with elaborate setups. I just want to know how to take a nice size closet (not abrow box) and get the right elements in there for sucess! I plan on having a 400hps, Carbon Canistor, Fans, and Ventalation. Need to know what to put where and how to hook up. Anyone?

Hay Rob.

I'm in the same boat as you on this, its the whole connecting stuff i just cant figure out myself.

So far i have only put the box together its 4Wx4Dx6H and thats all i have done to date. I will be using a 600w MH/HPS Switchable ballast with an Air-Cooled reflector. All i know is that i have to put my passive intakes on the bottom left and put my exhaust fan top right. What size these need to be + a carbon filter, i just dont know. One day in the near future i might figure it out. But i dont see that happening for a while. If there's anyone that would like to help 2 new growers out, it would be great.

He he, can i join the "noobies that aint got s f'ing clue about ventilation" gang?

Greenstuff, i think youve got the basics there. Whats refered to as "passive intake" i think is basically a hole with a vent cover, the lower the better. Then at the top you will have an extraction fan...fitted to this inside the cab is carbon filter, so all that stinky air is sucked through the carbon filter before passing through the fan on its way out, clean and not reeking of weed.

Awesome carbon filter DIY tutorial here...

Yknow i think of all areas of setting up a grow room, when it comes to ventilation, there really isnt a right way and a wrong way...the objectives are simple: you have a very warm and smelly space, so a) you need a way for fresh air to get in, b) a way to push the hot stinky air out and c) a way to clean the air before it goes out, and any which way you achieve this is up to you...

i mean thats just what ive learned from here in the last few weeks...

cheers

the guy with the 4x4x6 room... it's 96 cubic feet in there... you need to switch that air out a couple of times a minute....

look at the CFM's of the fan's ur looking at....

then take into consideration that the carbon filter reduces the amount of pull depending on how fat/long the filter is... and do some rough math....

guesstimate that the carbon filter will bring the CFM's down by, i don't know, say 30%? i dont use HID bulbs so i'm no expert, but guesstimate it...

everyone here has mcgyvere'd they're grow room/box...

General rule of thumb...

Intake: Down low, Cool air is lower eh? Passive? Or forced air? (you have to decide)
Exhaust: Up high , Hot air is higher eh? Definitely want to find the cubic feet of your room, find a fan that can exhaust double that i believe ( I just go over board so I don't have to worry) example: 100 cubic foot room = 200 cubic foot exhaust fan

I Generally have a complete air swap every 2.5-3 minutes in my grow room , temps never get above 80 etc etc.. I believe that you want at the minimum an exhaust fan that can cycle your rooms air at least once every 5 minutes.

Using fan's you generally want to PULL through what ever it is your venting/exhausting

Carbon Filter===> Fan ===> Outside as an example! :peace:
