How to scrog up bushy nl#5xhaze girls?

Thanks @captainorganic79 -- yeah I do think I'll need a bit of luck to pull them through these last 4 weeks! :bigjoint:

Wow, just wow! They are really filling out now!
And I think it is a case of a watched kettle never boils or whatever the bloody saying is! Lol i think they will now concentrate on fattening up! And the new tips on the colas (foxtailing I think it is called? If not someone will tell me I'm wrong and call me a knob, no doubt!) is normal for a Sativa dominant strain, my Trainwreck did loads of it!
I've been looking into the yellowing of leaves for you, and read something which suggested it could be the fungus gnats that are to blame. The little bastards. Made me really itchy as well reading about it, so I hate them twice as much now. :-|
Thanks Stick! Yeah the kettle... it's probably a bit of that too! lol

Actually, I had foxtailing on my superskunks too - after a sort of stagnation phase, where the buds stopped growing, but the trichomes weren't changing color either. The buds fattened up significantly after they had appeared. Of course, That Grow isn't comparable to anything though LOL
But yes, foxtailing! hadn't thought about that yet, thanks! TBH I don't mind them stretching their tips a bit, be it foxtails already or just because of the raised lights -- it may be less of an eye candy, but looser bud distribution in this case will allow a bit more air to flow between the colas. (Really, I have created a monster and look forward to growing a few free-standing plants after this!! I'm going to do a topped/mainlined Dawn clone and a quick auto or 2, now that I know I won't be moving until November at the earliest. :p)

Sorry you bumped into the story of the fungus gnat, and the effects it had on you, because of me! haha
Yeah they do nibble roots - whereby I think there is more danger to that being damaging in young plants. I have been keeping the soil damp, and thus the fungal growth thriving, which should keep them on the surface & distract them away from the roots. But yeah, added to Dawn's rootbounded-ness, they could be contributing to the situation.
So there, another advantage of your DWC over soil right there for you: you won't ever have fungus gnats! ;)

It IS a weird situation, and as much as I'd like to help my plants ride through it, it's sooo hard to diagnose anything at the mo and decide WHAT that help could look like. So I'm easing into the thought that they're pretty much on their own for now (apart from mental support lol) and well yeah, yield may be lower because of my errors early on, but that's the learning experience I guess!
Cheers!

So while I've been procrastinating a bit on going out into the snow, I got pulled into my closet and whilst there took some lights out pix just to see how they'd look.
Might as well share a few budpix whilst I'm at it

The frosty landscape:

The Dawn and Dusk colas I've been documenting:
View attachment 3589642 View attachment 3589644
(ok the perspective on Dusk's is a bit retarded with that leaf sticking up in the middle, but you can see how different they are in shape!)

And here's one of Dawn's tallest (=25cm from the screen) that has started getting really fat these past days:
View attachment 3589643
.....buds aaaall the way down to the screen :D
This cola is 6cm wide at its widest spot up top (mostly, they're at about 3cm - on both Dawn and Dusk)
I'm looking forward to seeing if they will fatten up that much all the way down into the undergrowth!
Could be, because that is how they have been filling in too -- from top to bottom...

Which sits me right onto another fence:
to remove some of the cramped up leaves for air & space?
or to leave them to be discarded at the plant's discretion, keeping hold of the photosynthesizers and nute reservoir that they are?
LOL - I guess we'll see as they continue to develop :bigjoint:
Looking at that bud made me dribble lol...

wow! that was one of the funnest threads i have read in awhile. i like what hotrod Harley said..textbook grow for sure! i have been wanting to do a scrog, but for one reason or another, i always find the reason NOT to do it....but hats off to ya for picking out a technique that you thought was best fit for your space, and jumping at it! turned out just amazing! awesome job

Wow, really impressive. I think you have done a very good job growing these ladies. I am really interested of this strain (basically i wanna try all of sensi seed's strains haha:D). Really looking forward to see the end result of this grow :)

Day 50 of flower

Seven weeks and a day into flower, here they are, my beauties!

The big picture:

And I guess this is the point where this thread goes down the drain -- the best pix at theis stage are just...
Bud porn! -- definitely beginning to evince thoughts - nay dreams - of tasting them for the first time!

I'll be reducing the light, which has been on 11/13 for a week now, to 10/14 from tonight.
Maybe another two weeks?
We shall see! :weed:

Day 42 of flower
So here we are, at 6 full weeks of flower :)
View attachment 3592448

Not much change this week it seems -- just a bit of bud fattening going on, along with new flowers on the tips of the colas, the tallest of which stretched 1 cm after I raised the lights a bit just in case the yellowing tips had anything to do with too much light.
Not sure, I think not. The yellowing has spread to more colas now, I am just letting it go now, as I cannot be sure how much this is due to rootboundedness.

The "bud studies" - Dawn, Dusk, and Dawn's tall fat cola:
View attachment 3592452 View attachment 3592453 View attachment 3592454

Maybe it's just me getting used to all that floweriness, or that change is going on in details I fail to notice in all this abundance, but it feels like they're stopping.
I've seen this noted on other people's grows, also noticed this with my horrid auto grow (which however I do not consider a point of reference lol)...
Is this typical of the flowering cycle?

In any case, I will be reducing light time to 11 hours from today, maybe to let them know they can't stay like that forever haha

Oh and somewhat annoyingly, new fungus gnats appeared on the day I added the second round of nematodes. Maybe I should have just watered em all into the cannabis pot instead of sharing amongst other plants in my flat (thinking 5 mil for 5m² would go around easily)... I may have overestimated the nematodes' hunger / underestimated the amount of larvae that last profuse generation of fungus gnats deposited in the soil there ;)
Cheers!
Still some very pretty babies! In my experience a lot of strains stop growing the last few weeks of flowering. It's usually when the start to harden and dense up. Hope these girls finish nice for you :)

What did you use to take the great trichrome pics?
just a cheap USB microsope - I did do some photoshop color correction as of itself it takes the pix with too much red - that brings the colors closer to reality ;)
edit: these did turn out amazingly, the first I took with the microscope were actually disappointing ;) maybe it takes practice to get a hang of it, maybe I was just lucky haha

Absolutely beautiful. And excellent photography! Well done to you, they are looking so good! What are they smelling like now?
haha thanks -- caught me on the wrong foot there -- I hadn't even checked! lol
Actually they now smell less distinctly of fruit, which is a bit of a pity... maybe due to the fact that I'm letting the circulation fan run nonstop now under the canopy? (I have it directed at the back wall so it makes a swish through the whole closet and the breeze also gets to Dawn). No, huh...o_O
But they still smell very good -- Dawns still on the sweet side with a whiff of grape, whilst Dusk is going more spicy.
ohh, yumm!:bigjoint:
I think I need to put a lock on that closet soon and hide the key from myself LMAO

I had a USB microscope a few years back. I got rid of it because of the poor quality pics... I may have to look into them again. I'm sure the quatily has gotten better since then. For me the trichrome pics are the dirty underworld of the bud porn business :)

Long has it traversed the seas of oblivion, but now the day has come to reveal

nl5xhaze - the next generation :p

So I took these clones off Dawn (my larger, sativa-leaning girl) sometime in December and then kind of forgot about them -- of 6, 2 survived anyways and they have been through sundry hardships like
  • cold feet,
  • cold everything,
  • too little light (11w cfl lol),
  • then a warmer corner which revealed itself to be mold paradise - I think I saw some PM on the bottom leaves, which I promptly removed and am now carefully watching for - if it reappears these 2 girls are going to get chopped!
But before speaking of their demise, maybe I should present them first :D
Here they were before I topped them 12 days ago:

TINA
2016-01-20_topping2a_tina.JPG

TINKERBELL
she had burned herself growing into the spiral of the 11w CFL
2016-01-20_topping3a_tinkerbell.JPG

Also, they had gone into bloom, so I had to put an end to all this nonsense and topped them
2016-01-20_topping4_t+tb.JPG
You can see a PM affected leaf on the bottom left

They still didn't have adequate light, but I put them on 24/0 until I had gotten a better temporary light up.
They developed thus within 9 days:
2016-01-29_reveg+light_tb+t.JPG

That was 3 days ago, when they finally got 2x55w CFL tubes for light.

Today they looked like this:
2016-02-01_tb+t.JPG

My idea was to mainline one of them and veg it alongside some quick autos (maybe only one, I want an airy grow this time round, I'm thinking of Berry Bomb or Candy Kush). Give it a niiice long veg and then lots of space to flower out! MM

Given their history, their growth is rather irregular, so today I cut the leaf tips off the taller side branches to slow growth (apparently it does that) and removed growth from the potential mainline spot.

Then I went ahead and cleaned out Tina as her branches were already showing how she could be mainlined - yes they're staggered, but she's a clone after all.
I've left 4 branches on Tinkerbell which is more lopsided in growth, and depending on which of the pairs develops more nicely, the other will be removed in the next few days.

So here we are, on day 3 of 24/0 reveg, (before watering), which is set to continue for another 11.

Still not receiving updates for some reason! I thought you was being quiet, which isn't like you! lol :-P
Looking great and loving the mainline! Always wondered how a clone would turn out if it was mainlined!
Are you following any tutorial at all or just doing your own thing? I was thinking of following Nebula Hazes tutorial, apparently knocks time off veg and has better yields!
And how many tops are you going to be having?

So here we are, on
Day 56 of flower :D

The canopy is showing more and more signs of yellowing leaves, marking the progression towards harvest:
2016-02-07 (1).JPG

I did have the feeling the colas got a bit more frosty this week, but not mindblowingly - which, thinking on the fact that these plants are actually rootbound, isn't so much of a surprise ;)

The cola we have been following on Dawn:

2016-02-07_dawn.JPG

Dawn's tall fat bud and Dusk:
2016-02-07_dawn-tallbud (2).JPG 2016-02-07_dusk.JPG
A bit of foxtailing going on, on Dawn more than Dusk, and the pistils are going dry too -- more quickly on Dusk, who now seems to be finishing faster...

Looking more closely at the trichomes, I think I see some clouding up going on.
I still have trouble distinguishing the 2 - from my pics it looks either like a cloud forming at the base of the trich head or radial clouding up?).
What is definitely the case is that there are more red/amber trichs this week than last, but that may be due to the fact that I only looked at a leaf underside last week, whereas this week I compared top to bottomside (and the topside has more darkening going on):

sugar leaf topside:
2016-02-07_dawn (1).jpg 2016-02-07_dawn (3).jpg

bottomside:
2016-02-07_dawn (5).jpg 2016-02-07_dawn (6).jpg 2016-02-07_dawn (8).jpg

Giving them another week for sure.
What do you guys think? :weed:
