How to handle curing/drying if plants are unattended?

Hi, I'm a newbie and am very close to harvesting 3 healthy looking plants! The flowering stage has taken longer than I expected, so it's looking like they won't be ready to harvest until just before I have to leave town for the holidays...Talk about bad timing!! Since it will be a few weeks I will be away, and I know how crucial it is to be hands on during the harvest/curing phase I will need to figure out some alternative options.
I was considering cutting them down and hanging them to dry in the dark (and secure) basement (it's about 50% humidity no colder than 15 degrees Celsius) but my concern is 3 weeks will be too long and I will over dry my buds...
My other thought was to harvest the week before I travel so the buds can dry properly, but then I am not able to "burp" the jars while they're curing...I don't want to over dry my buds OR cause mold obviously, but there is no way around leaving them unattended, so I was hoping someone might have some tips on how to successfully do a "hands-free" cure if you will (poke holes in the jar or something?!), or if leaving the plants to dry for that amount of time will be ok after all?
Thank you in advance for your advice!

I've seen a couple of stories here about guys finding old paper bags that have buds they forgot about, and it's still been in pretty good shape months later. It may not be an ideal or recommended solution, but if you want more info, you may want to search the forum for paper bag and cardboard boxes left unattended. I would expect something similar from the cardboard box method as well. BUT either way, it's totally dependent on the temperature and humidity of the room you're going to store them in (a bedroom closet or your basement should work, but outside in a garage or shed is probably dangerous due to winter rain or snow).

Just make sure you've dried them as best as possible AND THAT THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO MOLD on your buds or you'll likely come home to a huge stinky mess.

I've just dried my whole plant in brown paper bags I took off as much leaf as poss and just covered the bottom of each bag then folded it down and placed it into another brown bag did this with 4 oz off my plant and hung them all off the zip round the back of my tent in my basement . It's been raining outside non stop and humidity was in the 90's outside and it's dried perfect in about a week , my buds were very small an airy but there was loads of them. I would highly recommend drying this way as there was no Mold and kept there smell great this way. I'll always dry like this from now on , I hate hanging them as it stinks the house out to much I felt it was kept in the bags a little bit which made it better . Bigger buds with more in each bag would take longer the dry so would be perfect for you when you are going away
