How long will marijuana legalization in Canada take do you think?

Ok, presuming the Conservatives are finally ousted, it's almost certain that the decriminalization and legalization process will begin shortly after. But just how long will that take?

I haven't been actively following the cause for a while, but I know that it's illegal because of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act including it in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. I also know that the Harper Government has been trying to further criminalize it for almost their entire reign, this being attempted by numerous failed bills to amend the act.

I'm just wondering, what is going to happen when the opposite inevitably occurs and we move to strike it from being included in the act. We've had a majority government for the past four years and they failed to get their way. I'm hoping we're just a nation ready to move forward on this issue and it's met with insufficient resistance to hinder it's progress all that much. Though, I'm worried we may still be years away from seeing change.

imo, best case scenario 2-3 years, realistically 3-4 and that's IF the Libs get a majority or gain the support of another party with enough seats to help them make all the required changes. Otherwise, do what I've been doing for 30+ years, fuck the law.

liberals are winning and they plan to legalize it right away
Will be interesting to see what "right away" means. If anyone's thinking next few months, think again. There are logistics to work out, program rules etc, all the special interest groups will lobby and get their say. Then the law has to get written/vetted/passed. The majority Libs helps and they seem to be willing to listen but if there's no allowance for growing/making your own meds then the whole thing is useless to me anyhow. I will not buy LP or government weed. (period)

17 months or under.

I think it will be a needed influx of tax money for their platform.
IMO they will be working quietly to hammer out specifics, but their plan is already formed.
They will announce more important measures first, then introduce legalization to start generating new forms of income to help pay the bills.

They could if they really push things and get some support, this would be about the shortest timeframe. Majority or not, they have to follow process/law, and that involves others outside the party that can throw hurdles in the way. Hopefully it will be this fast and allow for growing your own.

I honestly think we are being mis lead into thinking its going to be like colorado or some place like that
Personally its going to be regulated big time and set up for comercial big time business so unless you have millions your dreaming
they are not and i mean not going to let any tom dick n harry grow weed etc they will except medical MJ use and licenses will be given to the fatily ill people you know the ones with cancer and other life threatening disease etc .
For the wanna be claiming his back pain can only be cured or he feels better with growing weed n smoking it Dream on
what we should be hoping for is being able to grow 1 - 2 plants end of story
Cause being human we always will screw it up and abuse it same shit with the medical licensing now and the issues cause of years of studies and proven abuse done
There not going to let that happen again

people are just not properly reading or get too excited at the word legalize and jump to conclusions

The Liberal party’s official position on cannabis states: “We will legalise, regulate, and restrict access to marijuana. Canada’s current system of marijuana prohibition does not work. It does not prevent young people from using marijuana and too many Canadians end up with criminal records for possessing small amounts of the drug.

“To ensure that we keep marijuana out of the hands of children, and the profits out of the hands of criminals, we will legalise, regulate, and restrict access to marijuana.”

An elected Liberal government would begin working to legalize and regulate marijuana "right away," Justin Trudeau says.

"The Liberal Party is committed to legalizing and regulating marijuana," Trudeau said, in response to a reporter's question in Surrey, B.C., on Wednesday.

The Liberal Party Leader declined to set a firm timeline for legalization, but vowed to make it an early priority if elected on Oct. 19.

He said legalizing marijuana would fix a "failed system" and help "remove the criminal element" linked to the drug.

Trudeau went on to accuse Conservative Leader Stephen Harper of implementing anti-marijuana policies that allow the drug to fund "criminal organizations, street gangs and gun-runners."

"It is our intention to stop Mr. Harper's failed approach on marijuana," Trudeau added.

Trudeau said legalization could happen anywhere from a month to "a year or two" into a Liberal government, but he would make sure the process gets underway shortly after taking power.
